The services of this siddur were written for a gathered congregation, and they are long. This is a short order for every morning, for one person or a household: thanks on waking, the tzitzit, the Shema, the confession of the faith, prayer, and a blessing on the home before the day begins. The first two parts are said alone, on rising. The rest may be said alone or together; when praying alone, say every line.

IOn rising

1

On waking

On waking, before rising:

מוֹדֶה אֲנִי לְפָנֶיךָ מֶלֶךְ חַי וְקַיָּם שֶׁהֶחֱזַרְתָּ בִּי נִשְׁמָתִי בְּחֶמְלָה | רַבָּה אֱמוּנָתֶךָ׃

Modeh ani l’fanecha melech chai v’kayam shehechezarta bi nishmati b’chemlah | rabah emunatecha.

I give thanks1 before Thee, living and enduring King, that Thou hast returned my soul2 within me in compassion; great is Thy faithfulness.

Then say one of these, whichever speaks to your soul:

חַסְדֵי יְהוָה כִּי לֹא תָמְנוּ כִּי לֹא כָלוּ רַחֲמָיו׃ חֲדָשִׁים לַבְּקָרִים רַבָּה אֱמוּנָתֶךָ׃

Chasdei Yehovah ki lo tamnu ki lo chalu rachamav. Chadashim lab’karim rabah emunatecha.

Surely Yehovah’s lovingkindnesses are not consumed, surely His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Thy faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22–23

Ani shachavti va’ishanah | hekitzoti ki Yehovah yism’cheni.

I lay me down, and I sleep; I awake, for Yehovah sustaineth me. Psalm 3:5 [6 Heb.]

1 A woman says modah ani.

2 Hebrew neshamah: the breath of life that God breathed into man (Genesis 2:7). Elsewhere in this siddur it is rendered “breath.”

Source: Modeh Ani is a later Jewish prayer, not scripture; its closing words are from Lamentations 3:23.

2

Donning the tzitzit

For those who wear tzitzit.

Baruch atah Yehovah Eloheinu melech ha’olam asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav lilbosh arba ch’nafot v’tzitzit amen.

Blessed art Thou, Yehovah our God, King of the universe, who hath sanctified us by His commandments, to don the four corners with tzitzit. Amen.

Source: Karaite composition; the command is Numbers 15:37–41 and Deuteronomy 22:12.

And thou shalt love Yehovah thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be upon thy heart; and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thy hand, and they shall be for frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the door-posts of thy house, and upon thy gates. Deuteronomy 6:5–9

Source: the first line and the response are Karaite compositions; the titles in the first are biblical (Isaiah 43–44), and the close of the response is Psalm 111:9.

Please, O Yehovah, God of Israel, may it be Thy will to look from Thy holy dwelling in heaven with mercy and see the greatness of my suffering, affliction, and humiliation. When my soul fainteth within me, cast me not off from before Thee. When my strength faileth, save me in Thy mercy from all my debts, forgive all my iniquities, and pardon all my transgressions. End my years in pleasantness, and have pity and mercy upon me and upon my entire family. Please cause me to have success in my current plans and endeavors, and guard me in this city from evil men, from violent persons, and from the wicked people of the generation. Likewise, save me from the terror of the strife of the wicked, who provoke upon the roads and gloat in the cities; save me from them. Make me not depend upon any man nor upon the hand of any flesh and blood. Open before me Thy full and generous hand, give peace among us, and send blessing upon all our works. Feed us our allotted bread, and give us food to eat and clothing to wear, for we depend upon Thee, and in Thy great and holy name do we trust and seek shelter. Assist me to purify myself, O merciful and gracious God.

Here each may add the prayer of his own heart.

Moreover by them is Thy servant warned; in keeping of them there is great reward. Who can discern his errors? Clear Thou me from hidden faults. Keep back Thy servant also from presumptuous sins, that they may not have dominion over me; then shall I be faultless, and I shall be clear from great transgression. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable before Thee, O Yehovah, my Rock, and my Redeemer. Psalm 19:11–14 [12–15 Heb.]

Baruch Yehovah l’olam amen v’amen.

Blessed be Yehovah for evermore. Amen, and Amen. Psalm 89:52 [53 Heb.]

B’shem Yeshuenu amen.

In the name of our Yeshua. Amen.

Source: the central prayer is a Karaite composition; the verses before and after are scripture.

About this text

This short order is drawn from the Weekday Morning Prayer of this siddur, which is adapted from the Karaite Prayerbook edited and translated by Nehemia Gordon in consultation with Hakham Moshe Dabah (2002), based on the edition of Abraham Firkovich (Vilna, 1870–71), as shared through the Open Siddur Project under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International license. The blessing on the tzitzit, the Shema with its response, the “Truth!” confession and the prayer come from that service, with the changes described there.

The waking prayer and the blessing on the home were added for this order. Modeh Ani is a later Jewish prayer; the passages that follow it and the whole of the closing blessing are scripture. The transliteration follows the vowel points of the Hebrew and has not yet been fully proofread.
