How lovely are Thy tabernacles, O Yehovah of hosts! My soul yearneth, yea, even pineth for the courts of Yehovah; my heart and my flesh sing for joy unto the living God. Yea, the sparrow hath found a house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young; Thine altars, O Yehovah of hosts, my King, and my God. Happy are they that dwell in Thy house, they are ever praising Thee. Selah. Happy is the man whose strength is in Thee; in whose heart are the highways. Passing through the valley of Baca they make it a place of springs; yea, the early rain clotheth it with blessings. They go from strength to strength, every one of them appeareth before God in Zion. O Yehovah God of hosts, hear my prayer; give ear, O God of Jacob. Selah. Behold, O God our shield, and look upon the face of Thine anointed.1 For a day in Thy courts is better than a thousand; I had rather stand at the threshold of the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness. For Yehovah God is a sun and a shield; Yehovah giveth grace and glory; no good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly. O Yehovah of hosts, happy is the man that trusteth in Thee. Psalm 84:1–12 [2–13 Heb.]

That thy glory may rest down upon thy people, and upon this thy house, which we now dedicate to thee, that it may be sanctified and consecrated to be holy, and that thy holy presence may be continually in this house;
And that all people who shall enter upon the threshold of the Lord’s2 house may feel thy power, and feel constrained to acknowledge that thou hast sanctified it, and that it is thy house, a place of thy holiness.

It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel for ever; for in six days Yehovah made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day He ceased from work and rested. Exodus 31:16–17

And Moses assembled all the congregation of the children of Israel, and said unto them: “These are the words which Yehovah hath commanded, that ye should do them. Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you a holy day, a sabbath of solemn rest to Yehovah; whosoever doeth any work therein shall be put to death. Ye shall kindle no fire5 throughout your habitations upon the sabbath day.” Exodus 35:1–3

Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father, and ye shall keep My sabbaths: I am Yehovah your God. Leviticus 19:3
And now, behold, two hundred years had passed away, and the people of Nephi had waxed strong in the land. They observed to keep the law of Moses and the sabbath day holy unto the Lord.6 And they profaned not; neither did they blaspheme. And the laws of the land were exceedingly strict.
Jarom 1:5
5 Kindle no fire. The command is addressed to “your habitations”; the fires of the sanctuary burned on the Sabbath by commandment (Leviticus 6:13; Numbers 28:9–10). We do not kindle a new fire on the Sabbath. A fire prepared beforehand may be kept: wood may be added, and it may be revived from its own coals. Following Exodus 16:23, we prepare our food before the Sabbath and do not cook on it. We do not regard electric light and heat as the fire of which the verse speaks. The preserving of life is always lawful, for the commandments were given that we should live by them (Leviticus 18:5; Mark 2:27).
6 That is, unto Yehovah.

And Yehovah spoke unto Moses, saying: Command the children of Israel, and say unto them: My food which is presented unto Me for offerings made by fire, of a sweet savour unto Me, shall ye observe to offer unto Me in its due season. And thou shalt say unto them: This is the offering made by fire which ye shall bring unto Yehovah: he-lambs of the first year without blemish, two day by day, for a continual burnt-offering. The one lamb shalt thou offer in the morning, and the other lamb shalt thou offer at dusk; and the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a meal-offering, mingled with the fourth part of a hin of beaten oil. It is a continual burnt-offering, which was offered in mount Sinai, for a sweet savour, an offering made by fire unto Yehovah. And the drink-offering thereof shall be the fourth part of a hin for the one lamb; in the holy place shalt thou pour out a drink-offering of strong drink8 unto Yehovah. And the other lamb shalt thou present at dusk; as the meal-offering of the morning, and as the drink-offering thereof, thou shalt present it, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto Yehovah. Numbers 28:1–8

And behold, this is the whole meaning of the law, every whit pointing to that great and last sacrifice; and that great and last sacrifice will be the Son of God, yea, infinite and eternal.
Alma 34:14
And ye shall offer up unto me no more the shedding of blood; yea, your sacrifices and your burnt offerings shall be done away, for I will accept none of your sacrifices and your burnt offerings.
And ye shall offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite spirit. And whoso cometh unto me with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, him will I baptize with fire and with the Holy Ghost, even as the Lamanites, because of their faith in me at the time of their conversion, were baptized with fire and with the Holy Ghost, and they knew it not.

But the seventh day, the sabbath of the Lord9 thy God, thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates;
For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is; wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto My commandments which I command you this day, to love Yehovah your God, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul, that I will give the rain of your land in its season, the former rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil. And I will give grass in thy fields for thy cattle, and thou shalt eat and be satisfied. Take heed to yourselves, lest your heart be deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, and bow down unto them; and the anger of Yehovah be kindled against you, and He shut up the heaven, so that there shall be no rain, and the ground shall not yield her fruit; and ye perish quickly from off the good land which Yehovah giveth you. Therefore shall ye lay up these My words in your heart and in your soul; and ye shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes. And ye shall teach them your children, talking of them, when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt write them upon the door-posts of thy house, and upon thy gates; that your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, upon the land which Yehovah swore unto your fathers to give them, as the days of the heavens above the earth. Deuteronomy 11:13–21

And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of Yehovah, and do them; and that ye go not about after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go astray; that ye may remember and do all My commandments, and be holy unto your God. When my soul fainteth within me, cast me not off from before Thee. When my strength faileth, save me in Thy mercy from all my debts, forgive all my iniquities, and pardon all my transgressions. End my years in pleasantness, and have pity and mercy upon me and upon my entire family. Please cause me to have success in my current plans and endeavors, and guard me in this city from evil men, from violent persons, and from the wicked people of the generation. Likewise, save me from the terror of the strife of the wicked, who provoke upon the roads and gloat in the cities; save me from them. Make me not depend upon any man nor upon the hand of any flesh and blood. Open before me Thy full and generous hand, give peace among us, and send blessing upon all our works. Feed us our allotted bread, and give us food to eat and clothing to wear, for we depend upon Thee, and in Thy great and holy name do we trust and seek shelter. Assist me to purify myself, O merciful and gracious God.
Here each may add the prayer of his own heart.

Moreover by them is Thy servant warned; in keeping of them there is great reward. Who can discern his errors? Clear Thou me from hidden faults. Keep back Thy servant also from presumptuous sins, that they may not have dominion over me; then shall I be faultless, and I shall be clear from great transgression. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable before Thee, O Yehovah, my Rock, and my Redeemer. Psalm 19:11–14 [12–15 Heb.]

Blessed be Thy name, O God of gods, and Lord of lords. Thou didst create me in Thy great mercy, didst breathe into me the breath of life, and gavest me wisdom and understanding to declare Thy mighty acts and to sing Thy wonders. Because Thou art He that createth and formeth all souls, who sustaineth and provideth for all, who taketh away life in justice and giveth life through lovingkindness and great mercy, therefore, as long as my breath is within me, I am obliged to give thanks to Thy holy name, to praise Thy glory. Thou art Yehovah, Thou alone, an exalted King with a multitude of glory and praise, extolled and sanctified in heaven and on earth. Now if I have found favor in Thine eyes, receive my supplication and grant my request; do not scorn my prayer nor leave me frustrated. Hide not Thy face from me; for I am in distress; answer me speedily. I have no father but Thee; I have no one but Thee, and there is none that bringeth help to my soul besides Thee; for in Thy hand is power and might; and in Thy hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all.

On the Offerings and the Temple
The passages on the daily offering and the incense (Sabbath eve, Part 11) are recited in remembrance, at the hour when the evening lamb was offered and the incense burned.
From the beginning the offerings were “a similitude of the sacrifice of the Only Begotten of the Father” (Moses 5:7). The Tanakh itself looks past them to a person: the ram offered instead of the son (Genesis 22:13), the blood of the Passover lamb (Exodus 12:13), the servant “wounded for our transgressions” (Isaiah 53:5–6), and Messiah “cut off, but not for himself” (Daniel 9:26).
The risen Yeshua said, “in me is the law of Moses fulfilled,” and in the next breath named what that fulfilment ends: “ye shall offer up unto me no more the shedding of blood” (3 Nephi 9:17, 19). The Nephite prophets use “the law of Moses” in this same sense, for the “performances and ordinances” that were “types of things to come” (Mosiah 13:30–31) and whose “whole meaning” was the great and last sacrifice (Alma 34:13–14). So when He says that the law given unto Moses “hath an end in me,” He adds at once that “the covenant which I have made with my people is not all fulfilled,” and bids them “keep my commandments” (3 Nephi 15:8, 10). The offerings have reached their goal and their end in Him. The covenant and its commandments stand, and not one jot or one tittle passes from them while heaven and earth remain (Matthew 5:17–18). In place of the offerings He asks a broken heart and a contrite spirit (Psalm 51:16–17; 3 Nephi 9:20).
The temple is first the person, in whom God dwells (1 Corinthians 6:19; D&C 93:35). It is also the house of Yehovah that is yet to come, of which the temples of our day are a foreshadowing. When this service longs for His courts and prays for the building of Jerusalem, it speaks of both.
About this text
This service is adapted from the Sabbath Eve Prayer of the Karaite Prayerbook edited and translated by Nehemia Gordon in consultation with Hakham Moshe Dabah (2002), based on the edition of Abraham Firkovich (Vilna, 1870–71), as shared through the Open Siddur Project under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International license.
Changes have been made. The Divine Name is rendered “Yehovah”; the translation has been corrected against the Hebrew in places and set in one voice; Psalm 136 is given in full; a few later divine titles have been replaced with biblical ones in both Hebrew and English; rubrics, footnotes and notes have been added; readings from Restoration scripture, the closing “in the name of our Yeshua,” and the priestly blessing have been added; and verse references are given in both King James and Hebrew numbering. Restoration scripture is quoted as it stands.
The transliteration was prepared for this edition and follows the vowel points of the Hebrew text. It is a guide to pronunciation and has not yet been fully proofread.
