Sabbath Morning Prayer

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָׁנוּ בְּמִצְוֺתָיו לִלְבּוֹשׁ אַרְבַּע כְנָפוֹת בְצִיצִית אָמֵן׃

Baruch atah Yehovah Eloheinu melech ha’olam asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav lilbosh arba ch’nafot v’tzitzit amen.

Blessed art Thou, Yehovah our God, King of the universe, who hath sanctified us by His commandments, to don the four corners with tzitzit. Amen.

וַיְצַוֵּנוּ יְהוָה לַעֲשׂוֹת אֶת כָּל הַחֻקִּים הָאֵלֶּה לְיִרְאָה אֶת יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ | לְטוֹב לָנוּ כָּל הַיָּמִים לְחַיֹּתֵנוּ כְּהַיּוֹם הַזֶּה׃ וּצְדָקָה תִּהְיֶה לָּנוּ | כִּי נִשְׁמֹר לַעֲשׂוֹת אֶת כָּל הַמִּצְוָה הַזֹּאת לִפְנֵי יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּנוּ׃

Vaytzavenu Yehovah la’asot et kol hachukim ha’eleh l’yir’ah et Yehovah Eloheinu | l’tov lanu kol hayamim l’chayotenu k’hayom hazeh. Utzdakah tihyeh lanu | ki nishmor la’asot et kol hamitzvah hazot lifnei Yehovah Eloheinu ka’asher tzivanu.

And Yehovah commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear Yehovah our God, for our good always, that He might preserve us alive, as it is at this day. And it shall be righteousness unto us, if we observe to do all this commandment before Yehovah our God, as He hath commanded us. Deuteronomy 6:24–25

מַגִּיד דְּבָרָיו לְיַעֲקֹב | חֻקָּיו וּמִשְׁפָּטָיו לְיִשְׂרָאֵל׃ לֹא עָשָׂה כֵן לְכָל גּוֹי וּמִשְׁפָּטִים בַּל יְדָעוּם הַלְלוּ יָהּ׃

Magid d’varav l’Ya’akov | chukav umishpatav l’Yisra’el. Lo asah chen l’chol goi umishpatim bal y’da’um hal’lu Yah.

He declareth His word unto Jacob, His statutes and His ordinances unto Israel. He hath not dealt so with any nation; and as for His ordinances, they have not known them. Hallelujah. Psalm 147:19–20

בָּרוּךְ יְהוָה לְעוֹלָם אָמֵן וְאָמֵן׃

Baruch Yehovah l’olam amen v’amen.

Blessed be Yehovah for evermore. Amen, and Amen. Psalm 89:52 [53 Heb.]

מִי אָנֹכִי עָפָר וָאֵפֶר רִמָּה וְתוֹלֵעָה הֶבֶל וָרִיק שֶאֶזְכֶּה לַעֲמוֹד בִּתְפִלָּה לִפְנֵי הַמֶּלֶךְ הַגָּדוֹל וְהַנוֹרָא רָם וְנִשָּׂא שְׁמוֹ מֶלֶךְ מַלְכֵי הַמְּלָכִים קְדוֹשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל הָרִאשׁוֹן וְהָאַחֲרוֹן אֶלָּא בְּהִשָּעֲנִי עַל רַחֲמָיו הָרַבִּים וַחֲסָדָיו הַגְּדֹּלִים שֶׁהוּא מְרַחֵם עַל בְּרִיוֹתָיו וְרֹצֶה בִּתְפִלּוֹת וּבְתַחֲנוּנִים שֶׁל עֲבָדָיו כְּמוֹ שֶׁנֶאֱמַר׃

Mi anochi afar va’efer rimah v’tole’ah hevel varik she’ezkeh la’amod bitfilah lifnei hamelech hagadol v’hanora ram v’nisa sh’mo melech malchei ham’lachim k’dosh Yisra’el harishon v’ha’acharon ela b’hisha’ani al rachamav harabim vachasadav hag’dolim shehu m’rachem al b’riyotav v’rotzeh bitfilot uvtachanunim shel avadav k’mo shene’emar.

Who am I, but dust and ashes, maggot and worm, vain and empty, that I may be worthy to stand in prayer before the great and awesome King, sublime and exalted is His name, the King of emperors, the Holy One of Israel, the First and the Last; but I am dependent upon His great mercy and His magnificent grace,¹ for He has mercy upon His creations and accepts the prayers and supplications of His servants, as it is written:

קָרוֹב יְהוָה לְכָל קֹרְאָיו | לְכֹל אֲשֶׁר יִקְרָאֻהוּ בֶאֱמֶת׃ רְצוֹן יְרֵאָיו יַעֲשֶׂה | וְאֶת שַׁוְעָתָם יִשְׁמַע וְיוֹשִׁיעֵם׃

Karov Yehovah l’chol kor’av | l’chol asher yikra’uhu ve’emet. R’tzon y’re’av ya’aseh | v’et shav’atam yishma v’yoshi’em.

Yehovah is nigh unto all them that call upon Him, to all that call upon Him in truth. He will fulfil the desire of them that fear Him; He also will hear their cry, and will save them. Psalm 145:18–19

שֹׁמֵעַ תְּפִלָּה | עָדֶיךָ כָּל בָּשָׂר יָבֹאוּ׃

Shomea t’filah | adecha kol basar yavo’u.

O Thou that hearest prayer, unto Thee doth all flesh come. Psalm 65:2 [3 Heb.]

אַשְׁרֵי יוֹשְׁבֵי בֵיתֶךָ | עוֹד יְהַלְלוּךָ סֶּלָה׃

Ashrei yoshvei veitecha | od y’hal’lucha selah.

Happy are they that dwell in Thy house, they are ever praising Thee. Selah.² Psalm 84:4 [5 Heb.]

יְהוָה בֹּקֶר תִּשְׁמַע קוֹלִי | בֹּקֶר אֶעֱרָךְ לְךָ וַאֲצַפֶּה׃

Yehovah boker tishma koli | boker e’erach l’cha va’atzapeh.

O Yehovah, in the morning shalt Thou hear my voice; in the morning will I order my prayer unto Thee, and will look forward.³ Psalm 5:3 [4 Heb.]

וַאֲנִי אֵלֶיךָ יְהוָה שִׁוַּעְתִּי | וּבַבֹּקֶר תְּפִלָּתִי תְקַדְּמֶךָּ׃

Va’ani elecha Yehovah shiva’ti | uvaboker t’filati t’kad’meka.

But as for me, unto Thee, O Yehovah, do I cry, and in the morning doth my prayer come to meet Thee. Psalm 88:13 [14 Heb.]

יְהִי שֵׁם יְהוָה מְבֹרָךְ | מֵעַתָּה וְעַד עוֹלָם׃

Y’hi shem Yehovah m’vorach | me’atah v’ad olam.

Blessed be the name of Yehovah from this time forth and for ever.

מִמִּזְרַח שֶׁמֶשׁ עַד מְבוֹאוֹ | מְהֻלָּל שֵׁם יְהוָה׃

Mimizrach shemesh ad m’vo’o | m’hulal shem Yehovah.

From the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof Yehovah’s name is to be praised. Psalm 113:2–3

לְדָוִד בָּרֲכִי נַפְשִׁי אֶת יְהוָה | וְכָל קְרָבַי אֶת שֵׁם קָדְשׁוֹ׃

L’david barachi nafshi et Yehovah | v’chol k’ravai et shem kodsho.

A Psalm of David. Bless Yehovah, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name.

בָּרֲכִי נַפְשִׁי אֶת יְהוָה | וְאַל תִּשְׁכְּחִי כָּל גְּמוּלָיו׃

Barachi nafshi et Yehovah | v’al tishk’chi kol g’mulav.

Bless Yehovah, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits;

הַסֹּלֵחַ לְכָל עֲוֹנֵכִי | הָרֹפֵא לְכָל תַּחֲלֻאָיְכִי׃

Hasoleach l’chol avonechi | harofei l’chol tachalu’aychi.

Who forgiveth all thine iniquity; who healeth all thy diseases;

הַגּוֹאֵל מִשַּׁחַת חַיָּיְכִי | הַמְעַטְּרֵכִי חֶסֶד וְרַחֲמִים׃

Hago’el mishachat chayaychi | ham’at’rechi chesed v’rachamim.

Who redeemeth thy life from the pit; who encompasseth thee with lovingkindness⁵ and tender mercies;

הַמַּשְׂבִּיַע בַּטּוֹב עֶדְיֵךְ | תִּתְחַדֵּשׁ כַּנֶּשֶׁר נְעוּרָיְכִי׃

Hamasbiya batov edyech | titchadesh kanesher n’uraychi.

Who satisfieth thine old age⁶ with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle.

עֹשֵׂה צְדָקוֹת יְהוָה | וּמִשְׁפָּטִים לְכָל עֲשׁוּקִים׃

Oseh tz’dakot Yehovah | umishpatim l’chol ashukim.

Yehovah executeth righteousness, and acts of justice for all that are oppressed.

יוֹדִיעַ דְּרָכָיו לְמֹשֶׁה | לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל עֲלִילוֹתָיו׃

Yodia d’rachav l’Moshe | livnei Yisra’el alilotav.

He made known His ways unto Moses, His doings unto the children of Israel.

רַחוּם וְחַנּוּן יְהוָה | אֶרֶךְ אַפַּיִם וְרַב חָסֶד׃

Rachum v’chanun Yehovah | erech apayim v’rav chased.

Yehovah is full of compassion and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in lovingkindness.

לֹא לָנֶצַח יָרִיב | וְלֹא לְעוֹלָם יִטּוֹר׃

Lo lanetzach yariv | v’lo l’olam yitor.

He will not always contend; neither will He keep His anger for ever.

לֹא כַחֲטָאֵינוּ עָשָׂה לָנוּ | וְלֹא כַעֲוֹנֹתֵינוּ גָּמַל עָלֵינוּ׃

Lo chachata’einu asah lanu | v’lo cha’avonoteinu gamal aleinu.

He hath not dealt with us after our sins, nor requited us according to our iniquities.

כִּי כִגְבֹהַּ שָׁמַיִם עַל הָאָרֶץ | גָּבַר חַסְדּוֹ עַל יְרֵאָיו׃

Ki chigvoah shamayim al ha’aretz | gavar chasdo al y’re’av.

For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is His lovingkindness toward them that fear Him.

כִּרְחֹק מִזְרָח מִמַּעֲרָב | הִרְחִיק מִמֶּנּוּ אֶת פְּשָׁעֵינוּ׃

Kirchok mizrach mima’arav | hirchik mimenu et p’sha’einu.

As far as the east is from the west, so far hath He removed our transgressions from us.

כְּרַחֵם אָב עַל בָּנִים | רִחַם יְהוָה עַל יְרֵאָיו׃

K’rachem av al banim | richam Yehovah al y’re’av.

Like as a father hath compassion upon his children, so hath Yehovah compassion upon them that fear Him.

כִּי הוּא יָדַע יִצְרֵנוּ | זָכוּר כִּי עָפָר אֲנָחְנוּ׃

Ki hu yada yitzrenu | zachur ki afar anachnu.

For He knoweth our frame; He remembereth that we are dust.

אֱנוֹשׁ כֶּחָצִיר יָמָיו | כְּצִיץ הַשָּׂדֶה כֵּן יָצִיץ׃

Enosh kechatzir yamav | k’tzitz hasadeh ken yatzitz.

As for man, his days are as grass; as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth.

כִּי רוּחַ עָבְרָה בּוֹ וְאֵינֶנּוּ | וְלֹא יַכִּירֶנּוּ עוֹד מְקוֹמוֹ׃

Ki ruach avrah bo v’einenu | v’lo yakirenu od m’komo.

For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof knoweth it no more.

וְחֶסֶד יְהוָה מֵעוֹלָם וְעַד עוֹלָם עַל יְרֵאָיו | וְצִדְקָתוֹ לִבְנֵי בָנִים׃

V’chesed Yehovah me’olam v’ad olam al y’re’av | v’tzidkato livnei vanim.

But the lovingkindness of Yehovah is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear Him, and His righteousness unto children’s children;

לְשֹׁמְרֵי בְרִיתוֹ | וּלְזֹכְרֵי פִקֻּדָיו לַעֲשׂוֹתָם׃

L’shomrei v’rito | ulzochrei fikudav la’asotam.

To such as keep His covenant, and to those that remember His precepts to do them.

יְהוָה בַּשָּׁמַיִם הֵכִין כִּסְאוֹ | וּמַלְכוּתוֹ בַּכֹּל מָשָׁלָה׃

Yehovah bashamayim hechin kiso | umalchuto bakol mashalah.

Yehovah hath established His throne in the heavens; and His kingdom ruleth over all.

בָּרֲכוּ יְהוָה מַלְאָכָיו | גִּבֹּרֵי כֹחַ עֹשֵׂי דְבָרוֹ לִשְׁמֹעַ בְּקוֹל דְּבָרוֹ׃

Barachu Yehovah mal’achav | giborei choach osei d’varo lishmoa b’kol d’varo.

Bless Yehovah, ye angels of His, ye mighty in strength, that fulfil His word, hearkening unto the voice of His word.

בָּרֲכוּ יְהוָה כָּל צְבָאָיו | מְשָׁרְתָיו עֹשֵׂי רְצוֹנוֹ׃

Barachu Yehovah kol tz’va’av | m’shartav osei r’tzono.

Bless Yehovah, all ye His hosts; ye ministers of His, that do His pleasure.

בָּרֲכוּ יְהוָה כָּל מַעֲשָׂיו בְּכָל מְקֹמוֹת מֶמְשַׁלְתּוֹ | בָּרֲכִי נַפְשִׁי אֶת יְהוָה׃

Barachu Yehovah kol ma’asav b’chol m’komot memshalto | barachi nafshi et Yehovah.

Bless Yehovah, all ye His works, in all places of His dominion; bless Yehovah, O my soul. Psalm 103

בָּרֲכִי נַפְשִׁי אֶת יְהוָה | יְהוָה אֱלֹהַי גָּדַלְתָּ מְּאֹד הוֹד וְהָדָר לָבָשְׁתָּ׃

Barachi nafshi et Yehovah | Yehovah Elohai gadalta m’od hod v’hadar lavashta.

Bless Yehovah, O my soul. O Yehovah my God, Thou art very great; Thou art clothed with glory and majesty.

עֹטֶה אוֹר כַּשַּׂלְמָה | נוֹטֶה שָׁמַיִם כַּיְרִיעָה׃

Oteh or kasalmah | noteh shamayim kayri’ah.

Who coverest Thyself with light as with a garment, who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain;

הַמְקָרֶה בַמַּיִם עֲלִיּוֹתָיו | הַשָּׂם עָבִים רְכוּבוֹ הַמְהַלֵּךְ עַל כַּנְפֵי רוּחַ׃

Hamkareh vamayim aliyotav | hasam avim r’chuvo hamhalech al kanfei ruach.

Who layest the beams of Thine upper chambers in the waters, who makest the clouds Thy chariot, who walkest upon the wings of the wind;

עֹשֶׂה מַלְאָכָיו רוּחוֹת | מְשָׁרְתָיו אֵשׁ לֹהֵט׃

Oseh mal’achav ruchot | m’shartav esh lohet.

Who makest winds Thy messengers,⁸ the flaming fire Thy ministers.

יָסַד אֶרֶץ עַל מְכוֹנֶיהָ | בַּל תִּמּוֹט עוֹלָם וָעֶד׃

Yasad eretz al m’choneha | bal timot olam va’ed.

Who didst establish the earth upon its foundations, that it should not be moved for ever and ever;

תְּהוֹם כַּלְּבוּשׁ כִּסִּיתוֹ | עַל הָרִים יַעַמְדוּ מָיִם׃

T’hom kal’vush kisito | al harim ya’amdu mayim.

Thou didst cover it with the deep as with a vesture; the waters stood above the mountains.

מִן גַּעֲרָתְךָ יְנוּסוּן | מִן קוֹל רַעַמְךָ יֵחָפֵזוּן׃

Min ga’aratcha y’nusun | min kol ra’amcha yechafezun.

At Thy rebuke they fled, at the voice of Thy thunder they hasted away —

יַעֲלוּ הָרִים יֵרְדוּ בְקָעוֹת | אֶל מְקוֹם זֶה יָסַדְתָּ לָהֶם׃

Ya’alu harim yerdu v’ka’ot | el m’kom zeh yasadta lahem.

The mountains rose, the valleys sank down — unto the place which Thou hadst founded for them;

גְּבוּל שַׂמְתָּ בַּל יַעֲבֹרוּן | בַּל יְשׁוּבוּן לְכַסּוֹת הָאָרֶץ׃

G’vul samta bal ya’avorun | bal y’shuvun l’chasot ha’aretz.

Thou didst set a bound which they should not pass over, that they might not return to cover the earth.

הַמְשַׁלֵּחַ מַעְיָנִים בַּנְּחָלִים | בֵּין הָרִים יְהַלֵּכוּן׃

Hamshaleach ma’yanim ban’chalim | bein harim y’halechun.

Who sendest forth springs into the valleys; they run between the mountains;

יַשְׁקוּ כָּל חַיְתוֹ שָׂדָי | יִשְׁבְּרוּ פְרָאִים צְמָאָם׃

Yashku kol chayto sadai | yishb’ru f’ra’im tz’ma’am.

They give drink to every beast of the field, the wild asses quench their thirst.

עֲלֵיהֶם עוֹף הַשָּׁמַיִם יִשְׁכּוֹן | מִבֵּין עֳפָאיִם יִתְּנוּ קוֹל׃

Aleihem of hashamayim yishkon | mibein ofayim yit’nu kol.

Beside them dwell the fowl of the heaven, from among the branches they sing.

מַשְׁקֶה הָרִים מֵעֲלִיּוֹתָיו | מִפְּרִי מַעֲשֶׂיךָ תִּשְׂבַּע הָאָרֶץ׃

Mashkeh harim me’aliyotav | mip’ri ma’asecha tisba ha’aretz.

Who waterest the mountains from Thine upper chambers; the earth is full of the fruit of Thy works.

מַצְמִיחַ חָצִיר לַבְּהֵמָה וְעֵשֶׂב לַעֲבֹדַת הָאָדָם | לְהוֹצִיא לֶחֶם מִן הָאָרֶץ׃

Matzmiach chatzir lab’hemah v’esev la’avodat ha’adam | l’hotzi lechem min ha’aretz.

Who causeth the grass to spring up for the cattle, and herb for the service of man; to bring forth bread out of the earth,

וְיַיִן יְשַׂמַּח לְבַב אֱנוֹשׁ לְהַצְהִיל פָּנִים מִשָּׁמֶן | וְלֶחֶם לְבַב אֱנוֹשׁ יִסְעָד׃

V’yayin y’samach l’vav enosh l’hatzhil panim mishamen | v’lechem l’vav enosh yis’ad.

And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, making the face brighter than oil, and bread that stayeth man’s heart.

יִשְׂבְּעוּ עֲצֵי יְהוָה | אַרְזֵי לְבָנוֹן אֲשֶׁר נָטָע׃

Yisb’u atzei Yehovah | arzei L’vanon asher nata.

The trees of Yehovah have their fill, the cedars of Lebanon, which He hath planted;

אֲשֶׁר שָׁם צִפֳּרִים יְקַנֵּנוּ | חֲסִידָה בְּרוֹשִׁים בֵּיתָהּ׃

Asher sham tziporim y’kanenu | chasidah b’roshim beitah.

Wherein the birds make their nests; as for the stork, the fir-trees are her house.

הָרִים הַגְּבֹהִים לַיְּעֵלִים | סְלָעִים מַחְסֶה לַשְׁפַנִּים׃

Harim hag’vohim lay’elim | s’la’im machseh lashfanim.

The high mountains are for the wild goats; the rocks are a refuge for the conies.

עָשָׂה יָרֵחַ לְמוֹעֲדִים | שֶׁמֶשׁ יָדַע מְבוֹאוֹ׃

Asah yareach l’mo’adim | shemesh yada m’vo’o.

Who appointedst the moon for seasons;⁹ the sun knoweth his going down.

תָּשֶׁת חֹשֶׁךְ וִיהִי לָיְלָה | בּוֹ תִרְמֹשׂ כָּל חַיְתוֹ יָעַר׃

Tashet choshech vihi laylah | bo tirmos kol chayto ya’ar.

Thou makest darkness, and it is night, wherein all the beasts of the forest do creep forth.

הַכְּפִירִים שֹׁאֲגִים לַטָּרֶף | וּלְבַקֵּשׁ מֵאֵל אָכְלָם׃

Hak’firim sho’agim lataref | ulvakesh me-El achlam.

The young lions roar after their prey, and seek their food from God.

תִּזְרַח הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ יֵאָסֵפוּן | וְאֶל מְעוֹנֹתָם יִרְבָּצוּן׃

Tizrach hashemesh ye’asefun | v’el m’onotam yirbatzun.

The sun ariseth, they slink away, and couch in their dens.

יֵצֵא אָדָם לְפָעֳלוֹ | וְלַעֲבֹדָתוֹ עֲדֵי עָרֶב׃

Yetzei adam l’fo’olo | v’la’avodato adei arev.

Man goeth forth unto his work and to his labour until the evening.

מָה רַבּוּ מַעֲשֶׂיךָ יְהוָה כֻּלָּם בְּחָכְמָה עָשִׂיתָ | מָלְאָה הָאָרֶץ קִנְיָנֶךָ׃

Mah rabu ma’asecha Yehovah kulam b’chochmah asita | ma-Le’ah ha’aretz kinyanecha.

How manifold are Thy works, O Yehovah! In wisdom hast Thou made them all; the earth is full of Thy creatures.

זֶה הַיָּם גָּדוֹל וּרְחַב יָדָיִם | שָׁם רֶמֶשׂ וְאֵין מִסְפָּר חַיּוֹת קְטַנּוֹת עִם גְּדֹלוֹת׃

Zeh hayam gadol urchav yadayim | sham remes v’ein mispar chayot k’tanot im g’dolot.

Yonder sea, great and wide, therein are creeping things innumerable, living creatures, both small and great.

שָׁם אֳנִיּוֹת יְהַלֵּכוּן | לִוְיָתָן זֶה יָצַרְתָּ לְשַׂחֶק בּוֹ׃

Sham oniyot y’halechun | livyatan zeh yatzarta l’sachek bo.

There go the ships; there is leviathan, whom Thou hast formed to sport therein.

כֻּלָּם אֵלֶיךָ יְשַׂבֵּרוּן | לָתֵת אָכְלָם בְּעִתּוֹ׃

Kulam elecha y’saberun | latet achlam b’ito.

All of them wait for Thee, that Thou mayest give them their food in due season.

תִּתֵּן לָהֶם יִלְקֹטוּן | תִּפְתַּח יָדְךָ יִשְׂבְּעוּן טוֹב׃

Titen lahem yilkotun | tiftach yadcha yisb’un tov.

Thou givest it unto them, they gather it; Thou openest Thy hand, they are satisfied with good.

תַּסְתִּיר פָּנֶיךָ יִבָּהֵלוּן | תֹּסֵף רוּחָם יִגְוָעוּן וְאֶל עֲפָרָם יְשׁוּבוּן׃

Tastir panecha yibahelun | tosef rucham yigva’un v’el afaram y’shuvun.

Thou hidest Thy face, they vanish; Thou withdrawest their breath, they perish, and return to their dust.

תְּשַׁלַּח רוּחֲךָ יִבָּרֵאוּן | וּתְחַדֵּשׁ פְּנֵי אֲדָמָה׃

T’shalach ruchacha yibare’un | utchadesh p’nei adamah.

Thou sendest forth Thy spirit, they are created; and Thou renewest the face of the earth.

יְהִי כְבוֹד יְהוָה לְעוֹלָם | יִשְׂמַח יְהוָה בְּמַעֲשָׂיו׃

Y’hi ch’vod Yehovah l’olam | yismach Yehovah b’ma’asav.

May the glory of Yehovah endure for ever; let Yehovah rejoice in His works!

הַמַּבִּיט לָאָרֶץ וַתִּרְעָד | יִגַּע בֶּהָרִים וְיֶעֱשָׁנוּ׃

Hamabit la’aretz vatir’ad | yiga beharim v’ye’eshanu.

Who looketh on the earth, and it trembleth; He toucheth the mountains, and they smoke.

אָשִׁירָה לַיהוָה בְּחַיָּי | אֲזַמְּרָה לֵאלֹהַי בְּעוֹדִי׃

Ashirah la-Yehovah b’chayai | azam’rah le-Elohai b’odi.

I will sing unto Yehovah as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have any being.

יֶעֱרַב עָלָיו שִׂיחִי | אָנֹכִי אֶשְׂמַח בַּיהוָה׃

Ye’erav alav sichi | anochi esmach ba-Yehovah.

Let my musing be sweet unto Him; as for me, I will rejoice in Yehovah.

יִתַּמּוּ חַטָּאִים מִן הָאָרֶץ וּרְשָׁעִים עוֹד אֵינָם בָּרֲכִי נַפְשִׁי אֶת יְהוָה הַלְלוּ יָהּ׃

Yitamu chata’im min ha’aretz ursha’im od einam barachi nafshi et Yehovah hal’lu Yah.

Let sinners cease out of the earth, and let the wicked be no more. Bless Yehovah, O my soul. Hallelujah. Psalm 104

בָּרוּךְ יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל | עֹשֵׂה נִפְלָאוֹת לְבַדּוֹ׃

Baruch Yehovah Elohim Elohei Yisra’el | oseh nifla’ot l’vado.

Blessed be Yehovah God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things;

וּבָרוּךְ שֵׁם כְּבוֹדוֹ לְעוֹלָם | וְיִמָּלֵא כְבוֹדוֹ אֶת כֹּל הָאָרֶץ אָמֵן וְאָמֵן׃

Uvaruch shem k’vodo l’olam | v’yimalei ch’vodo et kol ha’aretz amen v’amen.

And blessed be His glorious name for ever; and let the whole earth be filled with His glory. Amen, and Amen. Psalm 72:18–19

שֹׁמֵעַ תְּפִלָּה | עָדֶיךָ כָּל בָּשָׂר יָבֹאוּ׃

כִּי שֹׁמֵעַ אֶל אֶבְיוֹנִים יְהוָה | וְאֶת אֲסִירָיו לֹא בָזָה׃

Ki shomea el evyonim Yehovah | v’et asirav lo vazah.

For Yehovah hearkeneth unto the needy, and despiseth not His prisoners. Psalm 69:33 [34 Heb.]

כִּי לֹא בָזָה וְלֹא שִׁקַּץ עֱנוּת עָנִי וְלֹא הִסְתִּיר פָּנָיו מִמֶּנּוּ | וּבְשַׁוְּעוֹ אֵלָיו שָׁמֵעַ׃

Ki lo vazah v’lo shikatz enut ani v’lo histir panav mimenu | uvshav’o elav shamea.

For He hath not despised nor abhorred the lowliness of the poor; neither hath He hid His face from him; but when he cried unto Him, He heard. Psalm 22:24 [25 Heb.]

שְׁמַע יְהוָה קוֹלִי אֶקְרָא וְחָנֵּנִי וַעֲנֵנִי׃

Sh’ma Yehovah koli ekra v’chaneni va’aneni.

Hear, O Yehovah, when I call with my voice, and be gracious unto me, and answer me. Psalm 27:7

Yehovah k’raticha chushah li ha’azinah koli b’kar’i lach.

Yehovah, I have called Thee; make haste unto me; give ear unto my voice, when I call unto Thee. Psalm 141:1*

B’kar’i aneni Elohei tzidki batzar hirchavta li | chaneni ushma t’filati.

Yehovah b’chochmah yasad aretz | konen shamayim bitvunah.

Yehovah by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding He established the heavens. Proverbs 3:19

יְהוָה בְּהַשָּׁמַיִם חַסְדֶּךָ | אֱמוּנָתְךָ עַד שְׁחָקִים׃

Yehovah b’hashamayim chasdecha | emunatcha ad sh’chakim.

O Yehovah, Thy lovingkindness is in the heavens; Thy faithfulness reacheth unto the skies. Psalm 36:5 [6 Heb.]

יְהוָה בַּשָּׁמַיִם הֵכִין כִּסְאוֹ | וּמַלְכוּתוֹ בַּכֹּל מָשָׁלָה׃

Yehovah bashamayim hechin kiso | umalchuto bakol mashalah.

Yehovah hath established His throne in the heavens; and His kingdom ruleth over all. Psalm 103:19

יְהוָה אֲדֹנֵינוּ מָה אַדִּיר שִׁמְךָ בְּכָל הָאָרֶץ | אֲשֶׁר תְּנָה הוֹדְךָ עַל הַשָּׁמָיִם׃

Yehovah adoneinu mah adir shimcha b’chol ha’aretz | asher t’nah hodcha al hashamayim.

O Yehovah, our Lord, how glorious is Thy name in all the earth! whose majesty is rehearsed above the heavens. Psalm 8:1 [2 Heb.]

יְהוָה אֵין כָּמוֹךָ וְאֵין אֱלֹהִים זוּלָתֶךָ | בְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר שָׁמַעְנוּ בְּאָזְנֵינוּ׃

Yehovah ein kamocha v’ein Elohim zulatecha | b’chol asher shama’nu b’ozneinu.

O Yehovah, there is none like Thee, neither is there any God beside Thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 1 Chronicles 17:20

מֵאֵין כָּמוֹךָ יְהוָה | גָּדוֹל אַתָּה וְגָדוֹל שִׁמְךָ בִּגְבוּרָה׃ מִי לֹא יִרָאֲךָ מֶלֶךְ הַגּוֹיִם כִּי לְךָ יָאָתָה | כִּי בְכָל חַכְמֵי הַגּוֹיִם וּבְכָל מַלְכוּתָם מֵאֵין כָּמוֹךָ׃

There is none like unto Thee, O Yehovah; Thou art great, and Thy name is great in might. Who would not fear Thee, O King of the nations? for it befitteth Thee; forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their royalty, there is none like unto Thee. Jeremiah 10:6–7

וְצִדְקָתְךָ אֱלֹהִים עַד מָרוֹם | אֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתָ גְדֹלוֹת אֱלֹהִים מִי כָמוֹךָ׃

V’tzidkatcha Elohim ad marom | asher asita g’dolot Elohim mi chamocha.

Thy righteousness also, O God, which reacheth unto high heaven; Thou who hast done great things, O God, who is like unto Thee? Psalm 71:19

מִי כָמֹכָה בָּאֵלִם יְהוָה מִי כָּמֹכָה נֶאְדָּר בַּקֹּדֶשׁ | נוֹרָא תְהִלֹּת עֹשֵׂה פֶלֶא׃

Mi chamochah ba’elim Yehovah mi kamochah nedar bakodesh | nora t’hilot oseh fele.

Who is like unto Thee, O Yehovah, among the gods? who is like unto Thee, glorious in holiness, awesome in praises, doing wonders? Exodus 15:11

אַתָּה הָאֵל עֹשֵׂה פֶלֶא | הוֹדַעְתָּ בָעַמִּים עֻזֶּךָ׃

Atah ha-El oseh fele | hoda’ta va’amim uzecha.

Thou art the God that doest wonders; Thou hast made known Thy strength among the peoples. Psalm 77:14 [15 Heb.]

יְהוָה אֱלֹהַי אַתָּה אֲרוֹמִמְךָ אוֹדֶה שִׁמְךָ כִּי עָשִׂיתָ פֶּלֶא | עֵצוֹת מֵרָחוֹק אֱמוּנָה אֹמֶן׃

Yehovah Elohai atah aromimcha odeh shimcha ki asita pele | etzot merachok emunah omen.

O Yehovah, Thou art my God, I will exalt Thee, I will praise Thy name, for Thou hast done wonderful things; even counsels of old, in faithfulness and truth. Isaiah 25:1

Vayomer Elohim y’hi or | vayhi or.

יוֹצֵר אוֹר וּבוֹרֵא חֹשֶׁךְ עֹשֶׂה שָׁלוֹם וּבוֹרֵא רָע | אֲנִי יְהוָה עֹשֶׂה כָל אֵלֶּה׃

Yotzer or uvorei choshech oseh shalom uvorei ra | ani Yehovah oseh chol eleh.

I form the light, and create darkness; I make peace, and create adversity;¹¹ I am Yehovah, that doeth all these things. Isaiah 45:7

עֹטֶה אוֹר כַּשַּׂלְמָה | נוֹטֶה שָׁמַיִם כַּיְרִיעָה׃

Oteh or kasalmah | noteh shamayim kayri’ah.

Who coverest Thyself with light as with a garment, who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain. Psalm 104:2

כִּי הִנֵּה יוֹצֵר הָרִים וּבֹרֵא רוּחַ וּמַגִּיד לְאָדָם מַה שֵּׂחוֹ עֹשֵׂה שַׁחַר עֵיפָה וְדֹרֵךְ עַל בָּמֳתֵי אָרֶץ | יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי צְבָאוֹת שְׁמוֹ׃

Ki hineh yotzer harim uvorei ruach umagid l’adam mah secho oseh shachar eifah v’dorech al bomotei aretz | Yehovah Elohei tz’va’ot sh’mo.

For, lo, He that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is his thought, that maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth; Yehovah, the God of hosts, is His name. Amos 4:13

יְהִי שֵׁם יְהוָה מְבֹרָךְ | מֵעַתָּה וְעַד עוֹלָם׃ מִמִּזְרַח שֶׁמֶשׁ עַד מְבוֹאוֹ | מְהֻלָּל שֵׁם יְהוָה׃

Y’hi shem Yehovah m’vorach | me’atah v’ad olam. Mimizrach shemesh ad m’vo’o | m’hulal shem Yehovah.

Blessed be the name of Yehovah from this time forth and for ever. From the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof Yehovah’s name is to be praised. Psalm 113:2–3

כִּי גָדוֹל אַתָּה וְעֹשֵׂה נִפְלָאוֹת | אַתָּה אֱלֹהִים לְבַדֶּךָ׃

Ki gadol atah v’oseh nifla’ot | atah Elohim l’vadecha.

For Thou art great, and doest wondrous things; Thou art God alone. Psalm 86:10

Thou art Yehovah, even Thou alone; Thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all things that are thereon, the seas and all that is in them, and Thou givest life to them all; and the host of heaven bows down unto Thee. Nehemiah 9:6

גַּם אֲנַחְנוּ נַעֲבֹד אֶת יְהוָה כִּי הוּא אֱלֹהֵינוּ׃

Gam anachnu na’avod et Yehovah ki hu Eloheinu.

We also will serve Yehovah; for He is our God. Joshua 24:18*

זֶה אֵלִי וְאַנְוֵהוּ אֱלֹהֵי אָבִי וַאֲרֹמְמֶנְהוּ׃

Zeh eli v’anvehu Elohei avi va’arom’menhu.

This is my God, and I will glorify Him; my father’s God, and I will exalt Him. Exodus 15:2*

To Him who alone doeth great wonders, for His lovingkindness endureth for ever.

לְעֹשֵׂה הַשָּׁמַיִם בִּתְבוּנָה | כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ׃

L’oseh hashamayim bitvunah | ki l’olam chasdo.

To Him that by understanding made the heavens, for His lovingkindness endureth for ever.

לְרֹקַע הָאָרֶץ עַל הַמָּיִם | כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ׃

L’roka ha’aretz al hamayim | ki l’olam chasdo.

To Him that spread forth the earth above the waters, for His lovingkindness endureth for ever.

לְעֹשֵׂה אוֹרִים גְּדֹלִים | כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ׃

L’oseh orim g’dolim | ki l’olam chasdo.

To Him that made great lights, for His lovingkindness endureth for ever.

אֶת הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ לְמֶמְשֶׁלֶת בַּיּוֹם | כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ׃

Et hashemesh l’memshelet bayom | ki l’olam chasdo.

The sun to rule by day, for His lovingkindness endureth for ever.

אֶת הַיָּרֵחַ וְכוֹכָבִים לְמֶמְשְׁלוֹת בַּלָּיְלָה | כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ׃

Et hayareach v’chochavim l’memsh’lot balaylah | ki l’olam chasdo.

The moon and stars to rule by night, for His lovingkindness endureth for ever.

לְמַכֵּה מִצְרַיִם בִּבְכוֹרֵיהֶם | כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ׃

L’makeh Mitzrayim bivchoreihem | ki l’olam chasdo.

To Him that smote Egypt in their first-born, for His lovingkindness endureth for ever.

וַיּוֹצֵא יִשְׂרָאֵל מִתּוֹכָם | כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ׃

Vayotzei Yisra’el mitocham | ki l’olam chasdo.

And brought out Israel from among them, for His lovingkindness endureth for ever.

בְּיָד חֲזָקָה וּבִזְרוֹעַ נְטוּיָה | כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ׃

B’yad chazakah uvizroa n’tuyah | ki l’olam chasdo.

With a strong hand, and with an outstretched arm, for His lovingkindness endureth for ever.

לְגֹזֵר יַם סוּף לִגְזָרִים | כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ׃

L’gozer yam suf ligzarim | ki l’olam chasdo.

To Him who divided the Red Sea in sunder, for His lovingkindness endureth for ever.

וְהֶעֱבִיר יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּתוֹכוֹ | כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ׃

V’he’evir Yisra’el b’tocho | ki l’olam chasdo.

And made Israel to pass through the midst of it, for His lovingkindness endureth for ever.

וְנִעֵר פַּרְעֹה וְחֵילוֹ בְיַם סוּף | כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ׃

V’ni’er Par’oh v’cheilo v’yam suf | ki l’olam chasdo.

But overthrew Pharaoh and his host in the Red Sea, for His lovingkindness endureth for ever.

לְמוֹלִיךְ עַמּוֹ בַּמִּדְבָּר | כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ׃

L’molich amo bamidbar | ki l’olam chasdo.

To Him that led His people through the wilderness, for His lovingkindness endureth for ever.

לְמַכֵּה מְלָכִים גְּדֹלִים | כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ׃

L’makeh m’lachim g’dolim | ki l’olam chasdo.

To Him that smote great kings, for His lovingkindness endureth for ever.

וַיַּהֲרֹג מְלָכִים אַדִּירִים | כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ׃

Vayaharog m’lachim adirim | ki l’olam chasdo.

And slew mighty kings, for His lovingkindness endureth for ever.

לְסִיחוֹן מֶלֶךְ הָאֱמֹרִי | כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ׃

L’Sichon melech ha’emori | ki l’olam chasdo.

Sihon king of the Amorites, for His lovingkindness endureth for ever.

וּלְעוֹג מֶלֶךְ הַבָּשָׁן | כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ׃

Ul’Og melech habashan | ki l’olam chasdo.

And Og king of Bashan, for His lovingkindness endureth for ever.

וְנָתַן אַרְצָם לְנַחֲלָה | כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ׃

V’natan artzam l’nachalah | ki l’olam chasdo.

And gave their land for a heritage, for His lovingkindness endureth for ever.

נַחֲלָה לְיִשְׂרָאֵל עַבְדּוֹ | כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ׃

Nachalah l’Yisra’el avdo | ki l’olam chasdo.

Even a heritage unto Israel His servant, for His lovingkindness endureth for ever.

שֶׁבְּשִׁפְלֵנוּ זָכַר לָנוּ | כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ׃

Sheb’shiflenu zachar lanu | ki l’olam chasdo.

Who remembered us in our low estate, for His lovingkindness endureth for ever.

וַיִּפְרְקֵנוּ מִצָּרֵינוּ | כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ׃

Vayifr’kenu mitzareinu | ki l’olam chasdo.

And hath delivered us from our adversaries, for His lovingkindness endureth for ever.

נֹתֵן לֶחֶם לְכָל בָּשָׂר | כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ׃

Noten lechem l’chol basar | ki l’olam chasdo.

Who giveth food to all flesh, for His lovingkindness endureth for ever.

Y’hi chasd’cha Yehovah aleinu | ka’asher yichalnu lach.

Let Thy lovingkindness, O Yehovah, be upon us, according as we have waited for Thee. Psalm 33:22

V’yom hash’vi’i shabbat la-Yehovah Elohecha | lo ta’aseh chol m’lachah atah uvincha uvitecha avd’cha va’amatcha uvhemtecha v’gercha asher bish’arecha. Ki sheshet yamim asah Yehovah et hashamayim v’et ha’aretz et hayam v’et kol asher bam vayanach bayom hash’vi’i | al ken berach Yehovah et yom hashabbat vaykad’shehu.

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work; but the seventh day is a sabbath unto Yehovah thy God, in it thou shalt not do any manner of work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; for in six days Yehovah made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested on the seventh day; wherefore Yehovah blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. Exodus 20:8–11

טוֹב לְהֹדוֹת לַיהוָה | וּלְזַמֵּר לְשִׁמְךָ עֶלְיוֹן׃ לְהַגִּיד בַּבֹּקֶר חַסְדֶּךָ | וֶאֱמוּנָתְךָ בַּלֵּילוֹת׃

Tov l’hodot la-Yehovah | ulzamer l’shimcha elyon. L’hagid baboker chasdecha | ve’emunatcha baleilot.

It is a good thing to give thanks unto Yehovah, and to sing praises unto Thy name, O Most High; to declare Thy lovingkindness in the morning, and Thy faithfulness in the night seasons. Psalm 92:1–2 [2–3 Heb.]

נְקַדְּמָה פָנָיו בְּתוֹדָה | בִּזְמִרוֹת נָרִיעַ לוֹ׃

N’kad’mah fanav b’todah | bizmirot naria lo.

Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving, let us shout for joy unto Him with psalms. Psalm 95:2

עֱנוּ לַיהוָה בְּתוֹדָה | זַמְּרוּ לֵאלֹהֵינוּ בְכִנּוֹר׃

Enu la-Yehovah b’todah | zam’ru le-Eloheinu v’chinor.

Sing unto Yehovah with thanksgiving, sing praises upon the harp unto our God. Psalm 147:7

זְבַח לֵאלֹהִים תּוֹדָה | וְשַׁלֵּם לְעֶלְיוֹן נְדָרֶיךָ׃

Z’vach le-Elohim todah | v’shalem l’elyon n’darecha.

Offer unto God the sacrifice of thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the Most High. Psalm 50:14

זֹבֵחַ תּוֹדָה יְכַבְּדָנְנִי | וְשָׂם דֶּרֶךְ אַרְאֶנּוּ בְּיֵשַׁע אֱלֹהִים׃

Zoveach todah y’chab’dan’ni | v’sam derech ar’enu b’yesha Elohim.

Whoso offereth the sacrifice of thanksgiving honoureth Me; and to him that ordereth his way aright will I show the salvation of God. Psalm 50:23

לַשְׁמִעַ בְּקוֹל תּוֹדָה | וּלְסַפֵּר כָּל נִפְלְאוֹתֶיךָ׃

Lashmia b’kol todah | ulsaper kol nifl’otecha.

That I may make the voice of thanksgiving to be heard, and tell of all Thy wondrous works. Psalm 26:7

A Psalm of thanksgiving. Shout unto Yehovah, all the earth. Serve Yehovah with gladness; come before His presence with singing. Know ye that Yehovah He is God; it is He that hath made us, and we are His,¹⁴ His people, and the flock of His pasture. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise; give thanks unto Him, and bless His name. For Yehovah is good; His lovingkindness endureth for ever; and His faithfulness unto all generations. Psalm 100

רֹאשׁ דְּבָרְךָ אֱמֶת | וּלְעוֹלָם כָּל מִשְׁפַּט צִדְקֶךָ׃

Rosh d’varcha emet | ulolam kol mishpat tzidkecha.

The beginning of Thy word is truth; and all Thy righteous ordinance endureth for ever. Psalm 119:160

אַתָּה צִוִּיתָה פִקֻּדֶיךָ לִשְׁמֹר מְאֹד׃

Atah tzivitah fikudecha lishmor m’od.

Thou hast ordained Thy precepts, that we should observe them diligently. Psalm 119:4

הַשְׁמִיעֵנִי בַבֹּקֶר חַסְדֶּךָ כִּי בְךָ בָטָחְתִּי | הוֹדִיעֵנִי דֶּרֶךְ זוּ אֵלֵךְ כִּי אֵלֶיךָ נָשָׂאתִי נַפְשִׁי׃

Hashmi’eni vaboker chasdecha ki v’cha vatachti | hodi’eni derech zu elech ki elecha nasati nafshi.

Cause me to hear Thy lovingkindness in the morning, for in Thee do I trust; cause me to know the way wherein I should walk, for unto Thee have I lifted up my soul. Psalm 143:8

And Yehovah spoke unto Moses, saying: Command the children of Israel, and say unto them: My food which is presented unto Me for offerings made by fire, of a sweet savour unto Me, shall ye observe to offer unto Me in its due season. And thou shalt say unto them: This is the offering made by fire which ye shall bring unto Yehovah: he-lambs of the first year without blemish, two day by day, for a continual burnt-offering. The one lamb shalt thou offer in the morning, and the other lamb shalt thou offer at dusk; and the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a meal-offering, mingled with the fourth part of a hin of beaten oil. It is a continual burnt-offering, which was offered in mount Sinai, for a sweet savour, an offering made by fire unto Yehovah. And the drink-offering thereof shall be the fourth part of a hin for the one lamb; in the holy place shalt thou pour out a drink-offering of strong drink¹⁵ unto Yehovah. And the other lamb shalt thou present at dusk; as the meal-offering of the morning, and as the drink-offering thereof, thou shalt present it, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto Yehovah. Numbers 28:1–8

וְהִקְטִיר עָלָיו אַהֲרֹן קְטֹרֶת סַמִּים | בַּבֹּקֶר בַּבֹּקֶר בְּהֵיטִיבוֹ אֶת הַנֵּרֹת יַקְטִירֶנָּה׃

V’hiktir alav Aharon k’toret samim | baboker baboker b’heitivo et hanerot yaktirenah.

And Aaron shall burn thereon incense of sweet spices; every morning, when he dresseth the lamps, he shall burn it. Exodus 30:7

וְלַעֲמֹד בַּבֹּקֶר בַּבֹּקֶר לְהֹדוֹת וּלְהַלֵּל לַיהוָה | וְכֵן לָעָרֶב׃

V’la’amod baboker baboker l’hodot ulhalel la-Yehovah | v’chen la’arev.

And to stand every morning to thank and praise Yehovah, and likewise at even. 1 Chronicles 23:30

אֲהַלְלָה שֵׁם אֱלֹהִים בְּשִׁיר | וַאֲגַדְּלֶנּוּ בְתוֹדָה׃

Ahal’lah shem Elohim b’shir | va’agad’lenu v’todah.

I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify Him with thanksgiving. Psalm 69:30 [31 Heb.]

יִשְׂמְחוּ הַשָּׁמַיִם וְתָגֵל הָאָרֶץ וְיֹאמְרוּ בַגּוֹיִם יְהוָה מָלָךְ׃

Yism’chu hashamayim v’tagel ha’aretz v’yomru vagoyim Yehovah malach.

Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; and let them say among the nations: “Yehovah reigneth.” 1 Chronicles 16:31

יְהוָה מָלָךְ יִרְגְּזוּ עַמִּים | יֹשֵׁב כְּרוּבִים תָּנוּט הָאָרֶץ׃

Yehovah malach yirg’zu amim | yoshev k’ruvim tanut ha’aretz.

Yehovah reigneth; let the peoples tremble; He is enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake.

יְהוָה בְּצִיּוֹן גָּדוֹל | וְרָם הוּא עַל כָּל הָעַמִּים׃

Yehovah b’Tziyon gadol | v’ram hu al kol ha’amim.

Yehovah is great in Zion; and He is high above all the peoples.

יוֹדוּ שִׁמְךָ גָּדוֹל וְנוֹרָא קָדוֹשׁ הוּא׃

Yodu shimcha gadol v’nora kadosh hu.

Let them praise Thy name as great and awesome; Holy is He.

וְעֹז מֶלֶךְ מִשְׁפָּט אָהֵב | אַתָּה כּוֹנַנְתָּ מֵישָׁרִים מִשְׁפָּט וּצְדָקָה בְּיַעֲקֹב אַתָּה עָשִׂיתָ׃

V’oz melech mishpat ahev | atah konanta meisharim mishpat utzdakah b’Ya’akov atah asita.

The strength also of the king who loveth justice — Thou hast established equity, Thou hast executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.

רוֹמְמוּ יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ וְהִשְׁתַּחֲווּ לַהֲדֹם רַגְלָיו קָדוֹשׁ הוּא׃

Rom’mu Yehovah Eloheinu v’hishtachavu lahadom raglav kadosh hu.

Exalt ye Yehovah our God, and prostrate yourselves¹⁶ at His footstool; Holy is He.

מֹשֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן בְּכֹהֲנָיו וּשְׁמוּאֵל בְּקֹרְאֵי שְׁמוֹ | קֹרִאים אֶל יְהוָה וְהוּא יַעֲנֵם׃

Moshe v’Aharon b’chohanav ushmu’el b’kor’ei sh’mo | koriym el Yehovah v’hu ya’anem.

Moses and Aaron among His priests, and Samuel among them that call upon His name, did call upon Yehovah, and He answered them.

בְּעַמּוּד עָנָן יְדַבֵּר אֲלֵיהֶם | שָׁמְרוּ עֵדֹתָיו וְחֹק נָתַן לָמוֹ׃

B’amud anan y’daber aleihem | shamru edotav v’chok natan lamo.

He spoke unto them in the pillar of cloud; they kept His testimonies, and the statute that He gave them.

יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ אַתָּה עֲנִיתָם | אֵל נֹשֵׂא הָיִיתָ לָהֶם וְנֹקֵם עַל עֲלִילוֹתָם׃

Yehovah Eloheinu atah anitam | El nosei hayita lahem v’nokem al alilotam.

O Yehovah our God, Thou didst answer them; a forgiving God wast Thou unto them, though Thou tookest vengeance of their misdeeds.

רוֹמְמוּ יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ וְהִשְׁתַּחֲווּ לְהַר קָדְשׁוֹ | כִּי קָדוֹשׁ יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ׃

Rom’mu Yehovah Eloheinu v’hishtachavu l’har kodsho | ki kadosh Yehovah Eloheinu.

Exalt ye Yehovah our God, and bow down toward His holy hill; for Yehovah our God is holy. Psalm 99

בָּרוּךְ יְהוָה לְעוֹלָם אָמֵן וְאָמֵן׃

Baruch Yehovah l’olam amen v’amen.

וְעַתָּה מַה נֹּאמַר אֱלֹהֵינוּ אַחֲרֵי זֹאת | כִּי עָזַבְנוּ מִצְוֺתֶיךָ׃

V’atah mah nomar Eloheinu acharei zot | ki azavnu mitzvotecha.

And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we have forsaken Thy commandments. Ezra 9:10

חָטָאנוּ עִם אֲבוֹתֵינוּ הֶעֱוִינוּ הִרְשָׁעְנוּ׃

Chatanu im avoteinu he’evinu hirsha’nu.

We have sinned with our fathers, we have done iniquitously, we have dealt wickedly. Psalm 106:6

חָטָאנוּ וְעָוִינוּ הִרְשַׁעְנוּ וּמָרָדְנוּ | וְסוֹר מִמִּצְוֹתֶךָ וּמִמִּשְׁפָּטֶיךָ׃

Chatanu v’avinu hirsha’nu umaradnu | v’sor mimitzvotecha umimishpatecha.

We have sinned, and have dealt iniquitously, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, and have turned aside from Thy commandments and from Thine ordinances. Daniel 9:5

מַה נְּדַבֵּר וּמַה נִּצְטַדָּק׃

Mah n’daber umah nitztadak.

What shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? Genesis 44:16*

כִּי בַחֲטָאֵינוּ וּבַעֲוֹנוֹת אֲבֹתֵינוּ יְרוּשָׁלִַם וְעַמְּךָ לְחֶרְפָּה לְכָל סְבִיבֹתֵינוּ׃

Ki vachata’einu uva’avonot avoteinu Y’rushalayim v’am’cha l’cherpah l’chol s’vivoteinu.

Because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and Thy people are become a reproach to all that are about us. Daniel 9:16*

Shavat m’sos libenu nehpach l’evel m’cholenu. Naflah ateret roshenu oi na lanu ki chatanu. Al zeh hayah daveh libenu al eleh chashchu eineinu. Al har Tziyon sheshamem shu’alim hil’chu vo.

The joy of our heart is ceased; our dance is turned into mourning. The crown is fallen from our head; woe unto us! for we have sinned. For this our heart is faint, for these things our eyes are dim; for the mountain of Zion, which is desolate, the foxes walk upon it. Lamentations 5:15–18

אִם אֶשְׁכָּחֵךְ יְרוּשָׁלִָם תִּשְׁכַּח יְמִינִי׃ תִּדְבַּק לְשׁוֹנִי לְחִכִּי אִם לֹא אֶזְכְּרֵכִי | אִם לֹא אַעֲלֶה אֶת יְרוּשָׁלִַם עַל רֹאשׁ שִׂמְחָתִי׃

Im eshkachech Y’rushalayim tishkach y’mini. Tidbak l’shoni l’chiki im lo ezk’rechi | im lo a’aleh et Y’rushalayim al rosh simchati.

If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning. Let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth, if I remember thee not; if I set not Jerusalem above my chiefest joy. Psalm 137:5–6

וְאַתָּה צַדִּיק עַל כָּל הַבָּא עָלֵינוּ | כִּי אֱמֶת עָשִׂיתָ וַאֲנַחְנוּ הִרְשָׁעְנוּ׃

V’atah tzadik al kol haba aleinu | ki emet asita va’anachnu hirsha’nu.

Howbeit Thou art just in all that is come upon us; for Thou hast dealt truly, but we have done wickedly. Nehemiah 9:33

שׁוּב מֵחֲרוֹן אַפֶּךָ וְהִנָּחֵם עַל הָרָעָה לְעַמֶּךָ׃

Shuv mecharon apecha v’hinachem al hara’ah l’amecha.

Turn from Thy fierce wrath, and relent¹⁷ of this evil against Thy people. Exodus 32:12*

שׁוּב לְמַעַן עֲבָדֶיךָ שִׁבְטֵי נַחֲלָתֶךָ׃

Shuv l’ma’an avadecha shivtei nachalatecha.

Return for Thy servants’ sake, the tribes of Thine inheritance. Isaiah 63:17*

הֲשִׁיבֵנוּ יְהוָה אֵלֶיךָ וְנָשׁוּבָה חַדֵּשׁ יָמֵינוּ כְּקֶדֶם׃

Hashivenu Yehovah elecha v’nashuvah chadesh yameinu k’kedem.

Turn Thou us unto Thee, O Yehovah, and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old. Lamentations 5:21

וְסָלַחְתָּ לַעֲוֹנֵנוּ וּלְחַטָּאתֵנוּ וּנְחַלְתָּנוּ׃

V’salachta la’avonenu ulchatatenu unchaltanu.

And pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for Thine inheritance. Exodus 34:9*

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable before Thee, O Yehovah, my Rock, and my Redeemer. Psalm 19:14 [15 Heb.]

אֲמָרַי הַאֲזִינָה יְהוָה בִּינָה הֲגִיגִי׃ הַקְשִׁיבָה לְקוֹל שַׁוְעִי מַלְכִּי וֵאלֹהָי | כִּי אֵלֶיךָ אֶתְפַּלָּל׃ יְהוָה בֹּקֶר תִּשְׁמַע קוֹלִי | בֹּקֶר אֶעֱרָךְ לְךָ וַאֲצַפֶּה׃

Amarai ha’azinah Yehovah binah hagigi. Hakshivah l’kol shav’i malki ve-Elohai | ki elecha etpalal. Yehovah boker tishma koli | boker e’erach l’cha va’atzapeh.

Give ear to my words, O Yehovah, consider my meditation. Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God; for unto Thee do I pray. O Yehovah, in the morning shalt Thou hear my voice; in the morning will I order my prayer unto Thee, and will look forward.³ Psalm 5:1–3 [2–4 Heb.]

בְּרָן יַחַד כּוֹכְבֵי בֹקֶר | וַיָּרִיעוּ כָּל בְּנֵי אֱלֹהִים׃

B’ran yachad kochvei voker | vayari’u kol b’nei Elohim.

When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?¹⁸ Job 38:7

וַאֲנִי אֵלֶיךָ יְהוָה שִׁוַּעְתִּי | וּבַבֹּקֶר תְּפִלָּתִי תְקַדְּמֶךָּ׃

Va’ani elecha Yehovah shiva’ti | uvaboker t’filati t’kad’meka.

But as for me, unto Thee, O Yehovah, do I cry, and in the morning doth my prayer come to meet Thee. Psalm 88:13 [14 Heb.]

וַאֲנִי אָשִׁיר עֻזֶּךָ וַאֲרַנֵּן לַבֹּקֶר חַסְדֶּךָ | כִּי הָיִיתָ מִשְׂגָּב לִי וּמָנוֹס בְּיוֹם צַר לִי׃

Va’ani ashir uzecha va’aranen laboker chasdecha | ki hayita misgav li umanos b’yom tzar li.

But as for me, I will sing of Thy strength; yea, I will sing aloud of Thy lovingkindness in the morning; for Thou hast been my high tower, and a refuge in the day of my distress. Psalm 59:16 [17 Heb.]

יְהוָה חָנֵּנוּ לְךָ קִוִּינוּ | הֱיֵה זְרֹעָם לַבְּקָרִים אַף יְשׁוּעָתֵנוּ בְּעֵת צָרָה׃

Yehovah chanenu l’cha kivinu | heyeh z’ro’am lab’karim af y’shu’atenu b’et tzarah.

O Yehovah, be gracious unto us; we have waited for Thee; be Thou their arm every morning, our salvation also in the time of trouble. Isaiah 33:2

כָּל תִּשָּׂא עָוֹן וְקַח טוֹב וּנְשַׁלְּמָה פָרִים שְׂפָתֵינוּ׃

Kol tisa avon v’kach tov unshal’mah farim s’fateinu.

Forgive all iniquity, and accept that which is good; so will we render for bullocks the offering of our lips. Hosea 14:2* [3 Heb.]

אֲהַלְלָה שֵׁם אֱלֹהִים בְּשִׁיר | וַאֲגַדְּלֶנּוּ בְתוֹדָה׃ וְתִיטַב לַיהוָה מִשּׁוֹר פָּר מַקְרִן מַפְרִיס׃

Ahal’lah shem Elohim b’shir | va’agad’lenu v’todah. V’titav la-Yehovah mishor par makrin mafris.

I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify Him with thanksgiving. And it shall please Yehovah better than a bullock that hath horns and hoofs. Psalm 69:30–31 [31–32 Heb.]

שְׁלַח אוֹרְךָ וַאֲמִתְּךָ הֵמָּה יַנְחוּנִי | יְבִיאוּנִי אֶל הַר קָדְשְׁךָ וְאֶל מִשְׁכְּנוֹתֶיךָ׃ וְאָבוֹאָה אֶל מִזְבַּח אֱלֹהִים אֶל אֵל שִׂמְחַת גִּילִי | וְאוֹדְךָ בְכִנּוֹר אֱלֹהִים אֱלֹהָי׃

Sh’lach orcha va’amit’cha hemah yanchuni | y’vi’uni el har kodsh’cha v’el mishk’notecha. V’avo’ah el mizbach Elohim el El simchat gili | v’odcha v’chinor Elohim Elohai.

O send out Thy light and Thy truth; let them lead me; let them bring me unto Thy holy mountain, and to Thy dwelling-places. Then will I go unto the altar of God, unto God, my exceeding joy; and praise Thee upon the harp, O God, my God. Psalm 43:3–4

וְאֶזְבְּחָה בְאָהֳלוֹ זִבְחֵי תְרוּעָה | אָשִׁירָה וַאֲזַמְּרָה לַיהוָה׃

V’ezb’chah v’oholo zivchei t’ru’ah | ashirah va’azam’rah la-Yehovah.

And I will offer in His tabernacle sacrifices with trumpet-sound; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto Yehovah. Psalm 27:6*

אֶרְחַץ בְּנִקָּיוֹן כַּפָּי | וַאֲסֹבְבָה אֶת מִזְבַּחֲךָ יְהוָה׃

Erchatz b’nikayon kapai | va’asov’vah et mizbachacha Yehovah.

I will wash my hands in innocency; so will I compass Thine altar, O Yehovah. Psalm 26:6

לְךָ אֶזְבַּח זֶבַח תּוֹדָה | וּבְשֵׁם יְהוָה אֶקְרָא׃ נְדָרַי לַיהוָה אֲשַׁלֵּם | נֶגְדָה נָּא לְכָל עַמּוֹ׃ בְּחַצְרוֹת בֵּית יְהוָה בְּתוֹכֵכִי יְרוּשָׁלִָם הַלְלוּ יָהּ׃

L’cha ezbach zevach todah | uvshem Yehovah ekra. N’darai la-Yehovah ashalem | negdah na l’chol amo. B’chatzrot beit Yehovah b’tochechi Y’rushalayim hal’lu Yah.

I will offer to Thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of Yehovah. I will pay my vows unto Yehovah, yea, in the presence of all His people; in the courts of Yehovah’s house, in the midst of thee, O Jerusalem. Hallelujah. Psalm 116:17–19

וְעָרְבָה לַיהוָה מִנְחַת יְהוּדָה וִירוּשָׁלִָם | כִּימֵי עוֹלָם וּכְשָׁנִים קַדְמֹנִיּוֹת׃

V’arvah la-Yehovah minchat y’hudah vi-Y’rushalayim | kimei olam uchshanim kadmoniyot.

Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto Yehovah, as in the days of old, and as in ancient years. Malachi 3:4

הֲשִׁיבֵנוּ יְהוָה אֵלֶיךָ וְנָשׁוּבָה חַדֵּשׁ יָמֵינוּ כְּקֶדֶם׃

Hashivenu Yehovah elecha v’nashuvah chadesh yameinu k’kedem.

Turn Thou us unto Thee, O Yehovah, and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old. Lamentations 5:21

וְסָלַחְתָּ לַעֲוֹנֵנוּ וּלְחַטָּאתֵנוּ וּנְחַלְתָּנוּ׃

V’salachta la’avonenu ulchatatenu unchaltanu.

And pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for Thine inheritance. Exodus 34:9*

בָּרוּךְ יְהוָה לְעוֹלָם אָמֵן וְאָמֵן׃

Baruch Yehovah l’olam amen v’amen.

שִׁמְעָה אֱלֹהִים רִנָּתִי | הַקְשִׁיבָה תְּפִלָּתִי׃

Shim’ah Elohim rinati | hakshivah t’filati.

Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer. Psalm 61:1 [2 Heb.]

וַאֲנִי תְפִלָּתִי לְךָ יְהוָה עֵת רָצוֹן אֱלֹהִים בְּרָב חַסְדֶּךָ | עֲנֵנִי בֶּאֱמֶת יִשְׁעֶךָ׃

Va’ani t’filati l’cha Yehovah et ratzon Elohim b’rav chasdecha | aneni be’emet yish’echa.

But as for me, let my prayer be unto Thee, O Yehovah, in an acceptable time; O God, in the abundance of Thy lovingkindness, answer me with the truth of Thy salvation. Psalm 69:13 [14 Heb.]

הַטֵּה יְהוָה אָזְנְךָ עֲנֵנִי כִּי עָנִי וְאֶבְיוֹן אָנִי׃

Hateh Yehovah azn’cha aneni ki ani v’evyon ani.

Incline Thine ear, O Yehovah, and answer me; for I am poor and needy.

שָׁמְרָה נַפְשִׁי כִּי חָסִיד אָנִי הוֹשַׁע עַבְדְּךָ אַתָּה אֱלֹהַי | הַבּוֹטֵחַ אֵלֶיךָ׃

Shamrah nafshi ki chasid ani hosha avd’cha atah Elohai | haboteach elecha.

Keep my soul, for I am godly;²⁰ O Thou my God, save Thy servant that trusteth in Thee.

חָנֵּנִי אֲדֹנָי | כִּי אֵלֶיךָ אֶקְרָא כָּל הַיּוֹם׃

Chaneni Adonai | ki elecha ekra kol hayom.

Be gracious unto me, O Lord; for unto Thee do I cry all the day.

שַׂמֵּחַ נֶפֶשׁ עַבְדֶּךָ | כִּי אֵלֶיךָ אֲדֹנָי נַפְשִׁי אֶשָּׂא׃

Sameach nefesh avdecha | ki elecha Adonai nafshi esa.

Rejoice the soul of Thy servant; for unto Thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.

כִּי אַתָּה אֲדֹנָי טוֹב וְסַלָּח | וְרַב חֶסֶד לְכָל קֹרְאֶיךָ׃

Ki atah Adonai tov v’salach | v’rav chesed l’chol kor’echa.

For Thou, Lord, art good, and ready to pardon, and plenteous in lovingkindness unto all them that call upon Thee.

הַאֲזִינָה יְהוָה תְּפִלָּתִי | וְהַקְשִׁיבָה בְּקוֹל תַּחֲנוּנוֹתָי׃

Ha’azinah Yehovah t’filati | v’hakshivah b’kol tachanunotai.

Give ear, O Yehovah, unto my prayer; and attend unto the voice of my supplications.

בְּיוֹם צָרָתִי אֶקְרָאֶךָּ כִּי תַעֲנֵנִי׃

B’yom tzarati ekra’eka ki ta’aneni.

In the day of my trouble I call upon Thee; for Thou wilt answer me.

אֵין כָּמוֹךָ בָאֱלֹהִים אֲדֹנָי וְאֵין כְּמַעֲשֶׂיךָ׃

Ein kamocha va-Elohim Adonai v’ein k’ma’asecha.

There is none like unto Thee among the gods, O Lord, and there are no works like Thine.

כָּל גּוֹיִם אֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתָ יָבוֹאוּ וְיִשְׁתַּחֲווּ לְפָנֶיךָ אֲדֹנָי | וִיכַבְּדוּ לִשְׁמֶךָ׃

Kol goyim asher asita yavo’u v’yishtachavu l’fanecha Adonai | vichab’du lishmecha.

All nations whom Thou hast made shall come and prostrate themselves before Thee, O Lord; and they shall glorify Thy name.

כִּי גָדוֹל אַתָּה וְעֹשֵׂה נִפְלָאוֹת | אַתָּה אֱלֹהִים לְבַדֶּךָ׃

Ki gadol atah v’oseh nifla’ot | atah Elohim l’vadecha.

For Thou art great, and doest wondrous things; Thou art God alone.

הוֹרֵנִי יְהוָה דַּרְכֶּךָ אֲהַלֵּךְ בַּאֲמִתֶּךָ | יַחֵד לְבָבִי לְיִרְאָה שְׁמֶךָ׃

Horeni Yehovah darkecha ahalech ba’amitecha | yached l’vavi l’yir’ah sh’mecha.

Teach me, O Yehovah, Thy way, that I may walk in Thy truth; make one my heart²¹ to fear Thy name.

אוֹדְךָ אֲדֹנָי אֱלֹהַי בְּכָל לְבָבִי | וַאֲכַבְּדָה שִׁמְךָ לְעוֹלָם׃

Odcha Adonai Elohai b’chol l’vavi | va’achab’dah shimcha l’olam.

I will thank Thee, O Lord my God, with my whole heart; and I will glorify Thy name for evermore.

כִּי חַסְדְּךָ גָּדוֹל עָלָי | וְהִצַּלְתָּ נַפְשִׁי מִשְּׁאוֹל תַּחְתִּיָּה׃

Ki chasd’cha gadol alai | v’hitzalta nafshi mish’ol tachtiyah.

For great is Thy lovingkindness toward me; and Thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest nether-world.²²

אֱלֹהִים זֵדִים קָמוּ עָלַי וַעֲדַת עָרִיצִים בִּקְשׁוּ נַפְשִׁי | וְלֹא שָׂמוּךָ לְנֶגְדָּם׃

Elohim zedim kamu alai va’adat aritzim bikshu nafshi | v’lo samucha l’negdam.

O God, the proud are risen up against me, and the company of violent men have sought after my soul, and have not set Thee before them.

וְאַתָּה אֲדֹנָי אֵל רַחוּם וְחַנּוּן | אֶרֶךְ אַפַּיִם וְרַב חֶסֶד וֶאֱמֶת׃

V’atah Adonai El rachum v’chanun | erech apayim v’rav chesed ve’emet.

But Thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in lovingkindness and truth.

פְּנֵה אֵלַי וְחָנֵּנִי | תְּנָה עֻזְּךָ לְעַבְדֶּךָ וְהוֹשִׁיעָה לְבֶן אֲמָתֶךָ׃

P’neh elai v’chaneni | t’nah uz’cha l’avdecha v’hoshi’ah l’ven amatecha.

O turn unto me, and be gracious unto me; give Thy strength unto Thy servant, and save the son of Thy handmaid.

עֲשֵׂה עִמִּי אוֹת לְטוֹבָה | וְיִרְאוּ שֹׂנְאַי וְיֵבֹשׁוּ כִּי אַתָּה יְהוָה עֲזַרְתַּנִי וְנִחַמְתָּנִי׃

Aseh imi ot l’tovah | v’yiru son’ai v’yevoshu ki atah Yehovah azartani v’nichamtani.

Work in my behalf a sign for good; that they that hate me may see it, and be put to shame, because Thou, Yehovah, hast helped me, and comforted me. Psalm 86:1*–17

עֶזְרִי מֵעִם יְהוָה | עֹשֵׂה שָׁמַיִם וָאָרֶץ׃

Ezri me’im Yehovah | oseh shamayim va’aretz.

My help cometh from Yehovah, who made heaven and earth. Psalm 121:2

יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל צַדִּיק אַתָּה כִּי נִשְׁאַרְנוּ פְלֵיטָה כְּהַיּוֹם הַזֶּה | הִנְנוּ לְפָנֶיךָ בְּאַשְׁמָתֵינוּ כִּי אֵין לַעֲמוֹד לְפָנֶיךָ עַל זֹאת׃

Yehovah Elohei Yisra’el tzadik atah ki nish’arnu f’leitah k’hayom hazeh | hin’nu l’fanecha b’ashmateinu ki ein la’amod l’fanecha al zot.

O Yehovah, the God of Israel, Thou art righteous; for we are left a remnant that is escaped, as it is this day; behold, we are before Thee in our guiltiness; for none can stand before Thee because of this. Ezra 9:15

כִּי רַבּוּ מְשׁוּבֹתֵינוּ לְךָ חָטָאנוּ׃

Ki rabu m’shuvoteinu l’cha chatanu.

For our backslidings are many, we have sinned against Thee. Jeremiah 14:7*

כִּי רַבּוּ פְשָׁעֵינוּ נֶגְדֶּךָ וְחַטֹּאותֵינוּ עָנְתָה בָּנוּ | כִּי פְשָׁעֵינוּ אִתָּנוּ וַעֲוֹנֹתֵינוּ יְדַעֲנוּם׃

Ki rabu f’sha’einu negdecha v’chatovteinu antah banu | ki f’sha’einu itanu va’avonoteinu y’da’anum.

For our transgressions are multiplied before Thee, and our sins testify against us; for our transgressions are present to us, and as for our iniquities, we know them. Isaiah 59:12

יָדַעְנוּ יְהוָה רִשְׁעֵנוּ עֲוֹן אֲבוֹתֵינוּ | כִּי חָטָאנוּ לָךְ׃

Yada’nu Yehovah rish’enu avon avoteinu | ki chatanu lach.

We acknowledge, O Yehovah, our wickedness, even the iniquity of our fathers; for we have sinned against Thee. Jeremiah 14:20

אֲבֹתֵינוּ חָטְאוּ וְאֵינָם וַאֲנַחְנוּ עֲוֹנֹתֵיהֶם סָבָלְנוּ׃

Avoteinu chatu v’einam va’anachnu avonoteihem savalnu.

Our fathers have sinned, and are not; and we have borne their iniquities.²⁴ Lamentations 5:7

וַתָּקֶם אֶת דְּבָרֶיךָ אֲשֶׁר דִּבַּרְתָּ בְּיַד מֹשֶׁה עַבְדֶּךָ׃

Vatakem et d’varecha asher dibarta b’yad Moshe avdecha.

And Thou hast performed Thy words which Thou spokest by the hand of Moses Thy servant:

וְהַנִּשְׁאָרִים בָּכֶם יִמַּקּוּ בַּעֲוֹנָם בְּאַרְצֹת אֹיְבֵיכֶם | וְאַף בַּעֲוֹנֹת אֲבֹתָם אִתָּם יִמָּקּוּ׃ וְהִתְוַדּוּ אֶת עֲוֹנָם וְאֶת עֲוֹן אֲבֹתָם בְּמַעֲלָם אֲשֶׁר מָעֲלוּ בִי | וְאַף אֲשֶׁר הָלְכוּ עִמִּי בְּקֶרִי׃

V’hanish’arim bachem yimaku ba’avonam b’artzot oyveichem | v’af ba’avonot avotam itam yimaku. V’hitvadu et avonam v’et avon avotam b’ma’alam asher ma’alu vi | v’af asher halchu imi b’keri.

“And they that are left of you shall pine away in their iniquity in your enemies’ lands; and also in the iniquities of their fathers shall they pine away with them. And they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, in their treachery which they committed against Me, and also that they have walked contrary unto Me.” Leviticus 26:39–40

הַלְלוּיָהּ הוֹדוּ לַיהוָה כִּי טוֹב | כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ׃

Hal’luyah hodu la-Yehovah ki tov | ki l’olam chasdo.

Hallelujah. O give thanks unto Yehovah; for He is good; for His lovingkindness endureth for ever.

מִי יְמַלֵּל גְּבוּרוֹת יְהוָה | יַשְׁמִיעַ כָּל תְּהִלָּתוֹ׃

Mi y’malel g’vurot Yehovah | yashmia kol t’hilato.

Who can express the mighty acts of Yehovah, or make all His praise to be heard?

אַשְׁרֵי שֹׁמְרֵי מִשְׁפָּט | עֹשֵׂה צְדָקָה בְכָל עֵת׃

Ashrei shomrei mishpat | oseh tz’dakah v’chol et.

Happy are they that keep justice, that do righteousness at all times.

זָכְרֵנִי יְהוָה בִּרְצוֹן עַמֶּךָ | פָּקְדֵנִי בִּישׁוּעָתֶךָ׃

Zachreni Yehovah birtzon amecha | pakdeni bishu’atecha.

Remember me, O Yehovah, when Thou favourest Thy people; O think of me at Thy salvation;

לִרְאוֹת בְּטוֹבַת בְּחִירֶיךָ לִשְׂמֹחַ בְּשִׂמְחַת גּוֹיֶךָ | לְהִתְהַלֵּל עִם נַחֲלָתֶךָ׃

Lirot b’tovat b’chirecha lismoach b’simchat goyecha | l’hithalel im nachalatecha.

That I may behold the prosperity of Thy chosen, that I may rejoice in the gladness of Thy nation, that I may glory with Thine inheritance.

חָטָאנוּ עִם אֲבוֹתֵינוּ הֶעֱוִינוּ הִרְשָׁעְנוּ׃

Chatanu im avoteinu he’evinu hirsha’nu.

We have sinned with our fathers, we have done iniquitously, we have dealt wickedly. Psalm 106:1–6

חַטָּאתִי אוֹדִיעֲךָ וַעֲוֹנִי לֹא כִסִּיתִי אָמַרְתִּי אוֹדֶה עֲלֵי פְשָׁעַי לַיהוָה | וְאַתָּה נָשָׂאתָ עֲוֹן חַטָּאתִי סֶלָה׃

Chatati odi’acha va’avoni lo chisiti amarti odeh alei f’sha’ai la-Yehovah | v’atah nasata avon chatati selah.

I acknowledged my sin unto Thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid; I said: “I will make confession concerning my transgressions unto Yehovah” — and Thou, Thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah. Psalm 32:5

רְאֵה עָנְיִי וַעֲמָלִי | וְשָׂא לְכָל חַטֹּאותָי׃

R’eh onyi va’amali | v’sa l’chol chatovtai.

See mine affliction and my travail; and forgive all my sins. Psalm 25:18

אֵין מְתֹם בִּבְשָׂרִי מִפְּנֵי זַעְמֶךָ | אֵין שָׁלוֹם בַּעֲצָמַי מִפְּנֵי חַטָּאתִי׃

Ein m’tom bivsari mip’nei za’mecha | ein shalom ba’atzamai mip’nei chatati.

There is no soundness in my flesh because of Thine indignation; neither is there any health in my bones because of my sin.

כִּי עֲוֹנֹתַי עָבְרוּ רֹאשִׁי | כְּמַשָּׂא כָבֵד יִכְבְּדוּ מִמֶּנִּי׃

Ki avonotai avru roshi | k’masa chaved yichb’du mimeni.

For mine iniquities are gone over my head; as a heavy burden they are too heavy for me. Psalm 38:3–4 [4–5 Heb.]

דִּבְרֵי עֲוֹנֹת גָּבְרוּ מֶנִּי | פְּשָׁעֵינוּ אַתָּה תְכַפְּרֵם׃

Divrei avonot gavru meni | p’sha’einu atah t’chap’rem.

The tale²⁶ of iniquities is too heavy for me; as for our transgressions, Thou wilt pardon them. Psalm 65:3 [4 Heb.]

אִם עֲוֹנֵינוּ עָנוּ בָנוּ יְהוָה עֲשֵׂה לְמַעַן שְׁמֶךָ | כִּי רַבּוּ מְשׁוּבֹתֵינוּ לְךָ חָטָאנוּ׃

Im avoneinu anu vanu Yehovah aseh l’ma’an sh’mecha | ki rabu m’shuvoteinu l’cha chatanu.

Though our iniquities testify against us, O Yehovah, work Thou for Thy name’s sake; for our backslidings are many, we have sinned against Thee. Jeremiah 14:7

אִם עֲוֹנוֹת תִּשְׁמָר יָהּ | אֲדֹנָי מִי יַעֲמֹד׃

Im avonot tishmar Yah | Adonai mi ya’amod.

If Thou, Yehovah,²⁷ shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?

כִּי עִמְּךָ הַסְּלִיחָה | לְמַעַן תִּוָּרֵא׃

Ki im’cha has’lichah | l’ma’an tivarei.

For with Thee there is forgiveness, that Thou mayest be feared. Psalm 130:3–4

כִּי אַתָּה אֲדֹנָי טוֹב וְסַלָּח | וְרַב חֶסֶד לְכָל קֹרְאֶיךָ׃

Ki atah Adonai tov v’salach | v’rav chesed l’chol kor’echa.

For Thou, Lord, art good, and ready to pardon, and plenteous in lovingkindness unto all them that call upon Thee. Psalm 86:5

אֲנִי אֶל אֱלֹהִים אֶקְרָא | וַיהוָה יוֹשִׁיעֵנִי׃

Ani el Elohim ekra | va-Yehovah yoshi’eni.

As for me, I will call upon God; and Yehovah shall save me. Psalm 55:16 [17 Heb.]

אֲנִי בְּצֶדֶק אֶחֱזֶה פָנֶיךָ | אֶשְׂבְּעָה בְהָקִיץ תְּמוּנָתֶךָ׃

Ani b’tzedek echezeh fanecha | esb’ah v’hakitz t’munatecha.

As for me, I shall behold Thy face in righteousness; I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with Thy likeness. Psalm 17:15

אֲנִי אָמַרְתִּי יְהוָה חָנֵּנִי | רְפָאָה נַפְשִׁי כִּי חָטָאתִי לָךְ׃

Ani amarti Yehovah chaneni | r’fa’ah nafshi ki chatati lach.

As for me, I said: “O Yehovah, be gracious unto me; heal my soul; for I have sinned against Thee.” Psalm 41:4 [5 Heb.]

חִלִּיתִי פָנֶיךָ בְכָל לֵב | חָנֵּנִי כְּאִמְרָתֶךָ׃

Chiliti fanecha v’chol lev | chaneni k’imratecha.

I have entreated Thy favour with my whole heart; be gracious unto me according to Thy word. Psalm 119:58

חָנֵּנִי אֱלֹהִים כְּחַסְדֶּךָ | כְּרֹב רַחֲמֶיךָ מְחֵה פְשָׁעָי׃

Chaneni Elohim k’chasdecha | k’rov rachamecha m’cheh f’sha’ai.

Be gracious unto me, O God, according to Thy lovingkindness; according to the multitude of Thy compassions blot out my transgressions.

הֶרֶב כַּבְּסֵנִי מֵעֲוֹנִי | וּמֵחַטָּאתִי טַהֲרֵנִי׃

Herev kab’seni me’avoni | umechatati tahareni.

Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

כִּי פְשָׁעַי אֲנִי אֵדָע | וְחַטָּאתִי נֶגְדִּי תָמִיד׃

Ki f’sha’ai ani eda | v’chatati negdi tamid.

For I know my transgressions; and my sin is ever before me.

לְךָ לְבַדְּךָ חָטָאתִי וְהָרַע בְּעֵינֶיךָ עָשִׂיתִי | לְמַעַן תִּצְדַּק בְּדָבְרֶךָ תִּזְכֶּה בְשָׁפְטֶךָ׃

L’cha l’vad’cha chatati v’hara b’einecha asiti | l’ma’an titzdak b’davrecha tizkeh v’shaftecha.

Against Thee, Thee only, have I sinned, and done that which is evil in Thy sight; that Thou mayest be justified when Thou speakest, and be in the right when Thou judgest.

הֵן בְּעָווֹן חוֹלָלְתִּי | וּבְחֵטְא יֶחֱמַתְנִי אִמִּי׃

Hen b’avon cholalti | uvchet yechematni imi.

Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.²⁸

הֵן אֱמֶת חָפַצְתָּ בַטֻּחוֹת | וּבְסָתֻם חָכְמָה תוֹדִיעֵנִי׃

Hen emet chafatzta vatuchot | uvsatum chochmah todi’eni.

Behold, Thou desirest truth in the inward parts; make me, therefore, to know wisdom in mine inmost heart.

תְּחַטְּאֵנִי בְאֵזוֹב וְאֶטְהָר | תְּכַבְּסֵנִי וּמִשֶּׁלֶג אַלְבִּין׃

T’chat’eni v’ezov v’ethar | t’chab’seni umisheleg albin.

Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

תַּשְׁמִיעֵנִי שָׂשׂוֹן וְשִׂמְחָה | תָּגֵלְנָה עֲצָמוֹת דִּכִּיתָ׃

Tashmi’eni sason v’simchah | tagelnah atzamot dikita.

Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which Thou hast crushed may rejoice.

הַסְתֵּר פָּנֶיךָ מֵחֲטָאָי | וְכָל עֲוֹנֹתַי מְחֵה׃

Haster panecha mechata’ai | v’chol avonotai m’cheh.

Hide Thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.

לֵב טָהוֹר בְּרָא לִי אֱלֹהִים | וְרוּחַ נָכוֹן חַדֵּשׁ בְּקִרְבִּי׃

Lev tahor b’ra li Elohim | v’ruach nachon chadesh b’kirbi.

Create me a clean heart, O God; and renew a stedfast spirit within me.

אַל תַּשְׁלִיכֵנִי מִלְּפָנֶיךָ | וְרוּחַ קָדְשְׁךָ אַל תִּקַּח מִמֶּנִּי׃

Al tashlicheni mil’fanecha | v’ruach kodsh’cha al tikach mimeni.

Cast me not away from Thy presence; and take not Thy holy spirit from me.

הָשִׁיבָה לִּי שְׂשׂוֹן יִשְׁעֶךָ | וְרוּחַ נְדִיבָה תִסְמְכֵנִי׃

Hashivah li s’son yish’echa | v’ruach n’divah tism’cheni.

Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation; and let a willing spirit uphold me.

אֲלַמְּדָה פֹשְׁעִים דְּרָכֶיךָ | וְחַטָּאִים אֵלֶיךָ יָשׁוּבוּ׃

Alam’dah fosh’im d’rachecha | v’chata’im elecha yashuvu.

Then will I teach transgressors Thy ways; and sinners shall return unto Thee.

הַצִּילֵנִי מִדָּמִים אֱלֹהִים אֱלֹהֵי תְּשׁוּעָתִי | תְּרַנֵּן לְשׁוֹנִי צִדְקָתֶךָ׃

Hatzileni midamim Elohim Elohei t’shu’ati | t’ranen l’shoni tzidkatecha.

Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, Thou God of my salvation; so shall my tongue sing aloud of Thy righteousness.

אֲדֹנָי שְׂפָתַי תִּפְתָּח | וּפִי יַגִּיד תְּהִלָּתֶךָ׃

Adonai s’fatai tiftach | ufi yagid t’hilatecha.

O Lord, open Thou my lips; and my mouth shall declare Thy praise.

כִּי לֹא תַחְפֹּץ זֶבַח וְאֶתֵּנָה | עוֹלָה לֹא תִרְצֶה׃

Ki lo tachpotz zevach v’etenah | olah lo tirtzeh.

For Thou delightest not in sacrifice, else would I give it; Thou hast no pleasure in burnt-offering.

זִבְחֵי אֱלֹהִים רוּחַ נִשְׁבָּרָה | לֵב נִשְׁבָּר וְנִדְכֶּה אֱלֹהִים לֹא תִבְזֶה׃

Zivchei Elohim ruach nishbarah | lev nishbar v’nidkeh Elohim lo tivzeh.

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, Thou wilt not despise.

הֵיטִיבָה בִרְצוֹנְךָ אֶת צִיּוֹן | תִּבְנֶה חוֹמוֹת יְרוּשָׁלִָם׃

Heitivah virtzoncha et Tziyon | tivneh chomot Y’rushalayim.

Do good in Thy favour unto Zion; build Thou the walls of Jerusalem.

אָז תַּחְפֹּץ זִבְחֵי צֶדֶק עוֹלָה וְכָלִיל | אָז יַעֲלוּ עַל מִזְבַּחֲךָ פָרִים׃

Az tachpotz zivchei tzedek olah v’chalil | az ya’alu al mizbachacha farim.

Then wilt Thou delight in the sacrifices of righteousness, in burnt-offering and whole offering; then will they offer bullocks upon Thine altar. Psalm 51:1–19 [3–21 Heb.]

הוֹשִׁיעָה אֶת עַמֶּךָ וּבָרֵךְ אֶת נַחֲלָתֶךָ | וּרְעֵם וְנַשְּׂאֵם עַד הָעוֹלָם׃

Hoshi’ah et amecha uvarech et nachalatecha | ur’em v’nas’em ad ha’olam.

Save Thy people, and bless Thine inheritance; and tend them, and carry them for ever. Psalm 28:9

מִי אֵל כָּמוֹךָ נֹשֵׂא עָוֹן וְעֹבֵר עַל פֶּשַׁע לִשְׁאֵרִית נַחֲלָתוֹ | לֹא הֶחֱזִיק לָעַד אַפּוֹ כִּי חָפֵץ חֶסֶד הוּא׃ יָשׁוּב יְרַחֲמֵנוּ יִכְבֹּשׁ עֲוֹנֹתֵינוּ | וְתַשְׁלִיךְ בִּמְצֻלוֹת יָם כָּל חַטֹּאותָם׃ תִּתֵּן אֱמֶת לְיַעֲקֹב חֶסֶד לְאַבְרָהָם | אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּעְתָּ לַאֲבֹתֵינוּ מִימֵי קֶדֶם׃

Mi El kamocha nosei avon v’over al pesha lish’erit nachalato | lo hechezik la’ad apo ki chafetz chesed hu. Yashuv y’rachamenu yichbosh avonoteinu | v’tashlich bimtzulot yam kol chatovtam. Titen emet l’Ya’akov chesed l’avraham | asher nishba’ta la’avoteinu mimei kedem.

Who is a God like unto Thee, that pardoneth the iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He retaineth not His anger for ever, because He delighteth in lovingkindness. He will again have compassion upon us; He will subdue our iniquities; and Thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea. Thou wilt show faithfulness to Jacob, lovingkindness to Abraham, as Thou hast sworn unto our fathers from the days of old. Micah 7:18–20

כִּי אֵל רַחוּם יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ לֹא יַרְפְּךָ וְלֹא יַשְׁחִיתֶךָ | וְלֹא יִשְׁכַּח אֶת בְּרִית אֲבֹתֶיךָ אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע לָהֶם׃

Ki El rachum Yehovah Elohecha lo yarp’cha v’lo yashchitecha | v’lo yishkach et b’rit avotecha asher nishba lahem.

For Yehovah thy God is a merciful God; He will not fail thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which He swore unto them. Deuteronomy 4:31

וְאַף גַּם זֹאת בִּהְיוֹתָם בְּאֶרֶץ אֹיְבֵיהֶם לֹא מְאַסְתִּים וְלֹא גְעַלְתִּים לְכַלֹּתָם לְהָפֵר בְּרִיתִי אִתָּם | כִּי אֲנִי יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיהֶם׃ וְזָכַרְתִּי לָהֶם בְּרִית רִאשֹׁנִים | אֲשֶׁר הוֹצֵאתִי אֹתָם מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם לְעֵינֵי הַגּוֹיִם לִהְיֹת לָהֶם לֵאלֹהִים אֲנִי יְהוָה׃

V’af gam zot bihyotam b’eretz oyveihem lo m’astim v’lo g’altim l’chalotam l’hafer b’riti itam | ki ani Yehovah Eloheihem. V’zacharti lahem b’rit rishonim | asher hotzeti otam me’eretz Mitzrayim l’einei hagoyim lihyot lahem le-Elohim ani Yehovah.

And yet for all that, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them, neither will I abhor them, to destroy them utterly, and to break My covenant with them; for I am Yehovah their God. But I will for their sakes remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God: I am Yehovah. Leviticus 26:44–45

וְזָכַרְתִּי אֶת בְּרִיתִי יַעֲקוֹב | וְאַף אֶת בְּרִיתִי יִצְחָק וְאַף אֶת בְּרִיתִי אַבְרָהָם אֶזְכֹּר וְהָאָרֶץ אֶזְכֹּר׃

V’zacharti et b’riti ya’akov | v’af et b’riti yitzchak v’af et b’riti avraham ezkor v’ha’aretz ezkor.

Then will I remember My covenant with Jacob, and also My covenant with Isaac, and also My covenant with Abraham will I remember; and I will remember the land. Leviticus 26:42

זְכֹר לְאַבְרָהָם לְיִצְחָק וּלְיִשְׂרָאֵל עֲבָדֶיךָ אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּעְתָּ לָהֶם בָּךְ וַתְּדַבֵּר אֲלֵהֶם אַרְבֶּה אֶת זַרְעֲכֶם כְּכוֹכְבֵי הַשָּׁמָיִם | וְכָל הָאָרֶץ הַזֹּאת אֲשֶׁר אָמַרְתִּי אֶתֵּן לְזַרְעֲכֶם וְנָחֲלוּ לְעֹלָם׃

Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Thy servants, to whom Thou didst swear by Thine own self, and saidst unto them: I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever. Exodus 32:13

זְכֹר עֲדָתְךָ קָנִיתָ קֶּדֶם גָּאַלְתָּ שֵׁבֶט נַחֲלָתֶךָ | הַר צִיּוֹן זֶה שָׁכַנְתָּ בּוֹ׃

Z’chor adatcha kanita kedem ga’alta shevet nachalatecha | har Tziyon zeh shachanta bo.

Remember Thy congregation, which Thou hast gotten of old, which Thou hast redeemed to be the tribe of Thine inheritance; and mount Zion, wherein Thou hast dwelt. Psalm 74:2

הוֹשִׁיעָה אֶת עַמֶּךָ וּבָרֵךְ אֶת נַחֲלָתֶךָ | וּרְעֵם וְנַשְּׂאֵם עַד הָעוֹלָם׃

Rejoice the soul of Thy servant; for unto Thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. Psalm 86:4

אֱלֹהַי בְּךָ בָטַחְתִּי אַל אֵבוֹשָׁה | אַל יַעַלְצוּ אֹיְבַי לִי׃

Elohai b’cha vatachti al evoshah | al ya’altzu oyvai li.

O my God, in Thee have I trusted, let me not be ashamed; let not mine enemies triumph over me.

גַּם כָּל קוֶֹיךָ לֹא יֵבֹשׁוּ | יֵבֹשׁוּ הַבּוֹגְדִים רֵיקָם׃

Gam kol kvecha lo yevoshu | yevoshu habogdim reikam.

Yea, none that wait for Thee shall be ashamed; they shall be ashamed that deal treacherously without cause.

דְּרָכֶיךָ יְהוָה הוֹדִיעֵנִי | אֹרְחוֹתֶיךָ לַמְּדֵנִי׃

D’rachecha Yehovah hodi’eni | orchotecha lam’deni.

Show me Thy ways, O Yehovah; teach me Thy paths.

הַדְרִיכֵנִי בַאֲמִתֶּךָ וְלַמְּדֵנִי כִּי אַתָּה אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׁעִי | אוֹתְךָ קִוִּיתִי כָּל הַיּוֹם׃

Hadricheni va’amitecha v’lam’deni ki atah Elohei yish’i | otcha kiviti kol hayom.

Guide me in Thy truth, and teach me; for Thou art the God of my salvation; for Thee do I wait all the day.

זְכֹר רַחֲמֶיךָ יְהוָה וַחֲסָדֶיךָ | כִּי מֵעוֹלָם הֵמָּה׃

Z’chor rachamecha Yehovah vachasadecha | ki me’olam hemah.

Remember, O Yehovah, Thy compassions and Thy lovingkindnesses; for they have been from of old.

חַטֹּאות נְעוּרַי וּפְשָׁעַי אַל תִּזְכֹּר | כְּחַסְדְּךָ זְכָר לִי אַתָּה לְמַעַן טוּבְךָ יְהוָה׃

Chatovt n’urai ufsha’ai al tizkor | k’chasd’cha z’char li atah l’ma’an tuvcha Yehovah.

Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions; according to Thy lovingkindness remember Thou me, for Thy goodness’ sake, O Yehovah.

טוֹב וְיָשָׁר יְהוָה | עַל כֵּן יוֹרֶה חַטָּאִים בַּדָּרֶךְ׃

Tov v’yashar Yehovah | al ken yoreh chata’im badarech.

Good and upright is Yehovah; therefore doth He instruct sinners in the way.

יַדְרֵךְ עֲנָוִים בַּמִּשְׁפָּט | וִילַמֵּד עֲנָוִים דַּרְכּוֹ׃

Yadrech anavim bamishpat | vilamed anavim darko.

He guideth the humble in justice; and He teacheth the humble His way.

כָּל אָרְחוֹת יְהוָה חֶסֶד וֶאֱמֶת | לְנֹצְרֵי בְרִיתוֹ וְעֵדֹתָיו׃

Kol archot Yehovah chesed ve’emet | l’notzrei v’rito v’edotav.

All the paths of Yehovah are lovingkindness and truth unto such as keep His covenant and His testimonies.

לְמַעַן שִׁמְךָ יְהוָה | וְסָלַחְתָּ לַעֲוֹנִי כִּי רַב הוּא׃

L’ma’an shimcha Yehovah | v’salachta la’avoni ki rav hu.

For Thy name’s sake, O Yehovah, pardon mine iniquity, for it is great.

מִי זֶה הָאִישׁ יְרֵא יְהוָה | יוֹרֶנּוּ בְּדֶרֶךְ יִבְחָר׃

Mi zeh ha’ish y’rei Yehovah | yorenu b’derech yivchar.

What man is he that feareth Yehovah? him will He instruct in the way that He should choose.³⁰

נַפְשׁוֹ בְּטוֹב תָּלִין | וְזַרְעוֹ יִירַשׁ אָרֶץ׃

Nafsho b’tov talin | v’zaro yirash aretz.

His soul shall abide in prosperity; and his seed shall inherit the land.

סוֹד יְהוָה לִירֵאָיו | וּבְרִיתוֹ לְהוֹדִיעָם׃

Sod Yehovah lire’av | uvrito l’hodi’am.

The counsel of Yehovah is with them that fear Him; and His covenant, to make them know it.

עֵינַי תָּמִיד אֶל יְהוָה | כִּי הוּא יוֹצִיא מֵרֶשֶׁת רַגְלָי׃

Einai tamid el Yehovah | ki hu yotzi mereshet raglai.

Mine eyes are ever toward Yehovah; for He will bring forth my feet out of the net.

פְּנֵה אֵלַי וְחָנֵּנִי | כִּי יָחִיד וְעָנִי אָנִי׃

P’neh elai v’chaneni | ki yachid v’ani ani.

Turn Thee unto me, and be gracious unto me; for I am solitary and afflicted.

צָרוֹת לְבָבִי הִרְחִיבוּ | מִמְּצוּקוֹתַי הוֹצִיאֵנִי׃

Tzarot l’vavi hirchivu | mim’tzukotai hotzi’eni.

The troubles of my heart are enlarged; O bring Thou me out of my distresses.

רְאֵה עָנְיִי וַעֲמָלִי | וְשָׂא לְכָל חַטֹּאותָי׃

R’eh onyi va’amali | v’sa l’chol chatovtai.

See mine affliction and my travail; and forgive all my sins.

רְאֵה אוֹיְבַי כִּי רָבּוּ | וְשִׂנְאַת חָמָס שְׂנֵאוּנִי׃

R’eh oyvai ki rabu | v’sin’at chamas s’ne’uni.

Consider how many are mine enemies, and the cruel hatred wherewith they hate me.

שָׁמְרָה נַפְשִׁי וְהַצִּילֵנִי | אַל אֵבוֹשׁ כִּי חָסִיתִי בָךְ׃

Shamrah nafshi v’hatzileni | al evosh ki chasiti vach.

O keep my soul, and deliver me; let me not be ashamed, for I have taken refuge in Thee.

תֹּם וָיֹשֶׁר יִצְּרוּנִי | כִּי קִוִּיתִיךָ׃

Tom vayosher yitz’runi | ki kiviticha.

Let integrity and uprightness preserve me, because I wait for Thee.

פְּדֵה אֱלֹהִים אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל | מִכֹּל צָרוֹתָיו׃

P’deh Elohim et Yisra’el | mikol tzarotav.

Redeem Israel, O God, out of all his troubles. Psalm 25:1*–22

פּוֹדֶה יְהוָה נֶפֶשׁ עֲבָדָיו | וְלֹא יֶאְשְׁמוּ כָּל הַחֹסִים בּוֹ׃

Podeh Yehovah nefesh avadav | v’lo yesh’mu kol hachosim bo.

Yehovah redeemeth the soul of His servants; and none of them that take refuge in Him shall be desolate. Psalm 34:22 [23 Heb.]

בָּרוּךְ יְהוָה לְעוֹלָם אָמֵן וְאָמֵן׃

הָאֵל תָּמִים דַּרְכּוֹ | אִמְרַת יְהוָה צְרוּפָה מָגֵן הוּא לְכֹל הַחֹסִים בּוֹ׃

Ha-El tamim darko | imrat Yehovah tz’rufah magen hu l’chol hachosim bo.

As for God, His way is perfect; the word of Yehovah is tried;³² He is a shield unto all them that take refuge in Him. Psalm 18:30 [31 Heb.]

כָּל אִמְרַת אֱלוֹהַּ צְרוּפָה | מָגֵן הוּא לַחֹסִים בּוֹ׃

Kol imrat Eloah tz’rufah | magen hu lachosim bo.

Every word of God is tried; He is a shield unto them that take refuge in Him. Proverbs 30:5

אִמֲרוֹת יְהוָה אֲמָרוֹת טְהֹרוֹת | כֶּסֶף צָרוּף בַּעֲלִיל לָאָרֶץ מְזֻקָּק שִׁבְעָתָיִם׃

Imarot Yehovah amarot t’horot | kesef tzaruf ba’alil la’aretz m’zukak shiv’atayim.

The words of Yehovah are pure words, as silver tried in a crucible on the earth, refined seven times. Psalm 12:6 [7 Heb.]

שָׂשׂ אָנֹכִי עַל אִמְרָתֶךָ | כְּמוֹצֵא שָׁלָל רָב׃

Sas anochi al imratecha | k’motzei shalal rav.

I rejoice at Thy word, as one that findeth great spoil. Psalm 119:162

מַה נִּמְלְצוּ לְחִכִּי אִמְרָתֶךָ מִדְּבַשׁ לְפִי׃

Mah niml’tzu l’chiki imratecha mid’vash l’fi.

How sweet are Thy words unto my palate! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Psalm 119:103

צוּף דְּבַשׁ אִמְרֵי נֹעַם | מָתוֹק לַנֶּפֶשׁ וּמַרְפֵּא לָעָצֶם׃

Tzuf d’vash imrei no’am | matok lanefesh umarpei la’atzem.

Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones. Proverbs 16:24

צְרוּפָה אִמְרָתְךָ מְאֹד וְעַבְדְּךָ אֲהֵבָהּ׃

Tz’rufah imratcha m’od v’avd’cha ahevah.

Thy word is tried to the uttermost, and Thy servant loveth it. Psalm 119:140

וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר׃ וְאַתָּה דַּבֵּר אֶל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לֵאמֹר אַךְ אֶת שַׁבְּתֹתַי תִּשְׁמֹרוּ | כִּי אוֹת הִוא בֵּינִי וּבֵינֵיכֶם לְדֹרֹתֵיכֶם לָדַעַת כִּי אֲנִי יְהוָה מְקַדִּשְׁכֶם׃

Vayomer Yehovah el Moshe lemor. V’atah daber el b’nei Yisra’el lemor ach et shab’totai tishmoru | ki ot hi beini uveineichem l’doroteichem lada’at ki ani Yehovah m’kadishchem.

And Yehovah spoke unto Moses, saying: “Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying: Verily ye shall keep My sabbaths, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that ye may know that I am Yehovah who sanctify you.

וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם אֶת הַשַּׁבָּת כִּי קֹדֶשׁ הִוא לָכֶם | מְחַלְלֶיהָ מוֹת יוּמָת כִּי כָּל הָעֹשֶׂה בָהּ מְלָאכָה וְנִכְרְתָה הַנֶּפֶשׁ הַהִוא מִקֶּרֶב עַמֶּיהָ׃

Ushmartem et hashabbat ki kodesh hi lachem | m’chal’leha mot yumat ki kol ha’oseh vah m’lachah v’nichr’tah hanefesh hahiv mikerev ameha.

Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore, for it is holy unto you; every one that profaneth it shall surely be put to death; for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.

שֵׁשֶׁת יָמִים יֵעָשֶׂה מְלָאכָה וּבַיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי שַׁבַּת שַׁבָּתוֹן קֹדֶשׁ לַיהוָה | כָּל הָעֹשֶׂה מְלָאכָה בְּיוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת מוֹת יוּמָת׃

Sheshet yamim ye’aseh m’lachah uvayom hash’vi’i shabbat shabaton kodesh la-Yehovah | kol ha’oseh m’lachah b’yom hashabbat mot yumat.

Six days shall work be done; but on the seventh day is a sabbath of solemn rest, holy to Yehovah; whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.

וְשָׁמְרוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת הַשַּׁבָּת | לַעֲשׂוֹת אֶת הַשַּׁבָּת לְדֹרֹתָם בְּרִית עוֹלָם׃

V’shamru v’nei Yisra’el et hashabbat | la’asot et hashabbat l’dorotam b’rit olam.

Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.

בֵּינִי וּבֵין בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אוֹת הִוא לְעֹלָם | כִּי שֵׁשֶׁת יָמִים עָשָׂה יְהוָה אֶת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֶת הָאָרֶץ וּבַיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי שָׁבַת וַיִּנָּפַשׁ׃

Beini uvein b’nei Yisra’el ot hi l’olam | ki sheshet yamim asah Yehovah et hashamayim v’et ha’aretz uvayom hash’vi’i shavat vayinafash.

It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel for ever; for in six days Yehovah made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day He ceased from work and rested.” Exodus 31:12–17

וַיַּקְהֵל מֹשֶׁה אֶת כָּל עֲדַת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵהֶם | אֵלֶּה הַדְּבָרִים אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יְהוָה לַעֲשֹׂת אֹתָם׃

Vayakhel Moshe et kol adat b’nei Yisra’el vayomer alehem | eleh had’varim asher tzivah Yehovah la’asot otam.

And Moses assembled all the congregation of the children of Israel, and said unto them: “These are the words which Yehovah hath commanded, that ye should do them.

שֵׁשֶׁת יָמִים תֵּעָשֶׂה מְלָאכָה וּבַיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי יִהְיֶה לָכֶם קֹדֶשׁ שַׁבַּת שַׁבָּתוֹן לַיהוָה | כָּל הָעֹשֶׂה בוֹ מְלָאכָה יוּמָת׃

Sheshet yamim te’aseh m’lachah uvayom hash’vi’i yihyeh lachem kodesh shabbat shabaton la-Yehovah | kol ha’oseh vo m’lachah yumat.

Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you a holy day, a sabbath of solemn rest to Yehovah; whosoever doeth any work therein shall be put to death.

לֹא תְבַעֲרוּ אֵשׁ בְּכֹל מֹשְׁבֹתֵיכֶם | בְּיוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת׃

Lo t’va’aru esh b’chol moshvoteichem | b’yom hashabbat.

Ye shall kindle no fire³³ throughout your habitations upon the sabbath day.” Exodus 35:1–3

וַיְדַבֵּר יְהוָה אֶל מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר׃ דַּבֵּר אֶל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאָמַרְתָּ אֲלֵהֶם מוֹעֲדֵי יְהוָה אֲשֶׁר תִּקְרְאוּ אֹתָם מִקְרָאֵי קֹדֶשׁ | אֵלֶּה הֵם מוֹעֲדָי׃

Vaydaber Yehovah el Moshe lemor. Daber el b’nei Yisra’el v’amarta alehem mo’adei Yehovah asher tikr’u otam mikra’ei kodesh | eleh hem mo’adai.

And Yehovah spoke unto Moses, saying: Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: The appointed seasons of Yehovah, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are My appointed seasons.

שֵׁשֶׁת יָמִים תֵּעָשֶׂה מְלָאכָה וּבַיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי שַׁבַּת שַׁבָּתוֹן מִקְרָא קֹדֶשׁ כָּל מְלָאכָה לֹא תַעֲשׂוּ | שַׁבָּת הִוא לַיהוָה בְּכֹל מוֹשְׁבֹתֵיכֶם׃

וּבְיוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת שְׁנֵי כְבָשִׂים בְּנֵי שָׁנָה תְּמִימִם | וּשְׁנֵי עֶשְׂרֹנִים סֹלֶת מִנְחָה בְּלוּלָה בַשֶּׁמֶן וְנִסְכּוֹ׃

Uvyom hashabbat sh’nei ch’vasim b’nei shanah t’mimim | ushnei esronim solet minchah b’lulah vashemen v’nisko.

And on the sabbath day two he-lambs of the first year without blemish, and two tenth parts of an ephah of fine flour for a meal-offering, mingled with oil, and the drink-offering thereof.

עֹלַת שַׁבַּת בְּשַׁבַּתּוֹ | עַל עֹלַת הַתָּמִיד וְנִסְכָּהּ׃

Olat shabbat b’shabato | al olat hatamid v’niskah.

This is the burnt-offering of every sabbath, beside the continual burnt-offering, and the drink-offering thereof. Numbers 28:9–10

וּלְכֹל הַעֲלוֹת עֹלוֹת לַיהוָה לַשַּׁבָּתוֹת לֶחֳדָשִׁים וְלַמֹּעֲדִים | בְּמִסְפָּר כְּמִשְׁפָּט עֲלֵיהֶם תָּמִיד לִפְנֵי יְהוָה׃

Ulchol ha’alot olot la-Yehovah lashabatot lechodashim v’lamo’adim | b’mispar k’mishpat aleihem tamid lifnei Yehovah.

And to offer all burnt-offerings unto Yehovah, on the sabbaths, on the new moons, and in the appointed seasons, in number according to the ordinance concerning them, continually, before Yehovah. 1 Chronicles 23:31

וְעַל הַר סִינַי יָרַדְתָּ וְדַבֵּר עִמָּהֶם מִשָּׁמָיִם | וַתִּתֵּן לָהֶם מִשְׁפָּטִים יְשָׁרִים וְתוֹרוֹת אֱמֶת חֻקִּים וּמִצְוֺת טוֹבִים׃

V’al har Sinai yaradta v’daber imahem mishamayim | vatiten lahem mishpatim y’sharim v’torot emet chukim umitzvot tovim.

Thou camest down also upon mount Sinai, and spokest with them from heaven, and gavest them right ordinances and laws³⁵ of truth, good statutes and commandments;

וְאֶת שַׁבַּת קָדְשְׁךָ הוֹדַעַתָ לָהֶם | וּמִצְווֹת וְחֻקִּים וְתוֹרָה צִוִּיתָ לָהֶם בְּיַד מֹשֶׁה עַבְדֶּךָ׃

V’et shabbat kodsh’cha hoda’ata lahem | umitzvot v’chukim v’torah tzivita lahem b’yad Moshe avdecha.

And madest known unto them Thy holy sabbath, and didst command them commandments, and statutes, and Torah,³⁶ by the hand of Moses Thy servant. Nehemiah 9:13–14

כֹּה אָמַר יְהוָה שִׁמְרוּ מִשְׁפָּט וַעֲשׂוּ צְדָקָה | כִּי קְרוֹבָה יְשׁוּעָתִי לָבוֹא וְצִדְקָתִי לְהִגָּלוֹת׃

Ko amar Yehovah shimru mishpat va’asu tz’dakah | ki k’rovah y’shu’ati lavo v’tzidkati l’higalot.

Thus saith Yehovah: Keep ye justice, and do righteousness; for My salvation is near to come, and My righteousness³⁷ to be revealed.

אַשְׁרֵי אֱנוֹשׁ יַעֲשֶׂה זֹּאת וּבֶן אָדָם יַחֲזִיק בָּהּ | שֹׁמֵר שַׁבָּת מֵחַלְּלוֹ וְשֹׁמֵר יָדוֹ מֵעֲשׂוֹת כָּל רָע׃

Ashrei enosh ya’aseh zot uven adam yachazik bah | shomer shabbat mechal’lo v’shomer yado me’asot kol ra.

Happy is the man that doeth this, and the son of man that holdeth fast by it: that keepeth the sabbath from profaning it, and keepeth his hand from doing any evil. Isaiah 56:1–2

אִם תָּשִׁיב מִשַּׁבָּת רַגְלֶךָ עֲשׂוֹת חֲפָצֶיךָ בְּיוֹם קָדְשִׁי | וְקָרָאתָ לַשַּׁבָּת עֹנֶג לִקְדוֹשׁ יְהוָה מְכֻבָּד וְכִבַּדְתּוֹ מֵעֲשׂוֹת דְּרָכֶיךָ מִמְּצוֹא חֶפְצְךָ וְדַבֵּר דָּבָר׃

Im tashiv mishabbat raglecha asot chafatzecha b’yom kodshi | v’karata lashabbat oneg likdosh Yehovah m’chubad v’chibadto me’asot d’rachecha mim’tzo cheftz’cha v’daber davar.

If thou turn away thy foot because of the sabbath, from pursuing thy business³⁸ on My holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, and the holy of Yehovah honourable; and shalt honour it, not doing thy wonted ways, nor pursuing thy business, nor speaking thereof;

אָז תִּתְעַנַּג עַל יְהוָה וְהִרְכַּבְתִּיךָ עַל בָּמֳתֵי אָרֶץ | וְהַאֲכַלְתִּיךָ נַחֲלַת יַעֲקֹב אָבִיךָ כִּי פִּי יְהוָה דִּבֵּר׃

Az tit’anag al Yehovah v’hirkavticha al bomotei aretz | v’ha’achalticha nachalat Ya’akov avicha ki pi Yehovah diber.

Then shalt thou delight thyself in Yehovah, and I will make thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and I will feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father; for the mouth of Yehovah hath spoken it. Isaiah 58:13–14

אֶת שַׁבְּתֹתַי תִּשְׁמֹרוּ וּמִקְדָּשִׁי תִּירָאוּ | אֲנִי יְהוָה׃

Et shab’totai tishmoru umikdashi tira’u | ani Yehovah.

Ye shall keep My sabbaths, and reverence My sanctuary: I am Yehovah. Leviticus 19:30

אִישׁ אִמּוֹ וְאָבִיו תִּירָאוּ וְאֶת שַׁבְּתֹתַי תִּשְׁמֹרוּ | אֲנִי יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם׃

Ish imo v’aviv tira’u v’et shab’totai tishmoru | ani Yehovah Eloheichem.

Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father, and ye shall keep My sabbaths: I am Yehovah your God. Leviticus 19:3

אָשִׁירָה לַיהוָה בְּחַיָּי | אֲזַמְּרָה לֵאלֹהַי בְּעוֹדִי׃

Ashirah la-Yehovah b’chayai | azam’rah le-Elohai b’odi.

I will sing unto Yehovah as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have any being. Psalm 104:33

טוֹב לְהֹדוֹת לַיהוָה | וּלְזַמֵּר לְשִׁמְךָ עֶלְיוֹן׃

Tov l’hodot la-Yehovah | ulzamer l’shimcha elyon.

It is a good thing to give thanks unto Yehovah, and to sing praises unto Thy name, O Most High;

לְהַגִּיד בַּבֹּקֶר חַסְדֶּךָ | וֶאֱמוּנָתְךָ בַּלֵּילוֹת׃

L’hagid baboker chasdecha | ve’emunatcha baleilot.

to declare Thy lovingkindness in the morning, and Thy faithfulness in the night seasons,

עֲלֵי עָשׂוֹר וַעֲלֵי נָבֶל | עֲלֵי הִגָּיוֹן בְּכִנּוֹר׃

Alei asor va’alei navel | alei higayon b’chinor.

with an instrument of ten strings, and with the psaltery; with a solemn sound upon the harp.

כִּי שִׂמַּחְתַּנִי יְהוָה בְּפָעֳלֶךָ | בְּמַעֲשֵׂי יָדֶיךָ אֲרַנֵּן׃

Ki simachtani Yehovah b’fo’olecha | b’ma’asei yadecha aranen.

For Thou, Yehovah, hast made me glad through Thy work; I will exult in the works of Thy hands.

מַה גָּדְלוּ מַעֲשֶׂיךָ יְהוָה | מְאֹד עָמְקוּ מַחְשְׁבֹתֶיךָ׃

Mah gadlu ma’asecha Yehovah | m’od amku machsh’votecha.

How great are Thy works, O Yehovah! Thy thoughts are very deep.

אִישׁ בַּעַר לֹא יֵדָע | וּכְסִיל לֹא יָבִין אֶת זֹאת׃

Ish ba’ar lo yeda | uchsil lo yavin et zot.

A brutish man knoweth not, neither doth a fool understand this.

בִּפְרֹחַ רְשָׁעִים כְּמוֹ עֵשֶׂב וַיָּצִיצוּ כָּל פֹּעֲלֵי אָוֶן | לְהִשָּׁמְדָם עֲדֵי עַד׃

Bifroach r’sha’im k’mo esev vayatzitzu kol po’alei aven | l’hishamdam adei ad.

When the wicked spring up as the grass, and when all the workers of iniquity do flourish; it is that they may be destroyed for ever.

וְאַתָּה מָרוֹם לְעֹלָם יְהוָה׃

V’atah marom l’olam Yehovah.

But Thou, O Yehovah, art on high for evermore.

כִּי הִנֵּה אֹיְבֶיךָ יְהוָה כִּי הִנֵּה אֹיְבֶיךָ יֹאבֵדוּ | יִתְפָּרְדוּ כָּל פֹּעֲלֵי אָוֶן׃

Ki hineh oyvecha Yehovah ki hineh oyvecha yovedu | yitpardu kol po’alei aven.

For, lo, Thine enemies, O Yehovah, for, lo, Thine enemies shall perish: all the workers of iniquity shall be scattered.

וַתָּרֶם כִּרְאֵים קַרְנִי | בַּלֹּתִי בְּשֶׁמֶן רַעֲנָן׃

Vatarem kir’eim karni | baloti b’shemen ra’anan.

But my horn hast Thou exalted like the horn of the wild-ox; I am anointed with rich oil.

וַתַּבֵּט עֵינִי בְּשׁוּרָי | בַּקָּמִים עָלַי מְרֵעִים תִּשְׁמַעְנָה אָזְנָי׃

Vatabet eini b’shurai | bakamim alai m’re’im tishma’nah oznai.

Mine eye also hath gazed on them that lie in wait for me, mine ears have heard my desire of the evil-doers that rise up against me.

צַדִּיק כַּתָּמָר יִפְרָח | כְּאֶרֶז בַּלְּבָנוֹן יִשְׂגֶּה׃

Tzadik katamar yifrach | k’erez ba-L’vanon yisgeh.

The righteous shall flourish like the palm-tree; he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.

שְׁתוּלִים בְּבֵית יְהוָה | בְּחַצְרוֹת אֱלֹהֵינוּ יַפְרִיחוּ׃

Sh’tulim b’veit Yehovah | b’chatzrot Eloheinu yafrichu.

Planted in the house of Yehovah, they shall flourish in the courts of our God.

עוֹד יְנוּבוּן בְּשֵׂיבָה | דְּשֵׁנִים וְרַעֲנַנִּים יִהְיוּ׃

Od y’nuvun b’seivah | d’shenim v’ra’ananim yihyu.

They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be full of sap and richness;

לְהַגִּיד כִּי יָשָׁר יְהוָה | צוּרִי וְלֹא עַוְלָתָה בּוֹ׃

L’hagid ki yashar Yehovah | tzuri v’lo avlatah bo.

to declare that Yehovah is upright, my Rock, in whom there is no unrighteousness. Psalm 92

בָּרוּךְ יְהוָה לְעוֹלָם אָמֵן וְאָמֵן׃

Baruch Yehovah l’olam amen v’amen.

Blessed be Yehovah for evermore. Amen, and Amen. Psalm 89:52 [53 Heb.]

וּבְעֵת הֵחֵל הָעוֹלָה הֵחֵל שִׁיר יְהוָה וְהַחֲצֹצְרוֹת וְעַל יְדֵי כְּלֵי דָּוִיד מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל׃

Uv’et hechel ha’olah hechel shir Yehovah v’hachatzotzrot v’al y’dei k’lei david melech Yisra’el.

And when the burnt-offering began, the song of Yehovah began also, and the trumpets, together with the instruments of David king of Israel.

וְכָל הַקָּהָל מִשְׁתַּחֲוִים וְהַשִּׁיר מְשׁוֹרֵר וְהַחֲצֹצְרוֹת מַחְצְרִים | הַכֹּל עַד לִכְלוֹת הָעֹלָה׃

V’chol hakahal mishtachavim v’hashir m’shorer v’hachatzotzrot machtz’rim | hakol ad lichlot ha’olah.

And all the congregation prostrated themselves, and the singers sang, and the trumpeters sounded; all this continued until the burnt-offering was finished. 2 Chronicles 29:27*–28

וְעַתָּה מַה נֹּאמַר אֱלֹהֵינוּ אַחֲרֵי זֹאת | כִּי עָזַבְנוּ מִצְוֺתֶיךָ׃

V’atah mah nomar Eloheinu acharei zot | ki azavnu mitzvotecha.

And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we have forsaken Thy commandments. Ezra 9:10

חָטָאנוּ עִם אֲבוֹתֵינוּ הֶעֱוִינוּ הִרְשָׁעְנוּ׃

Chatanu im avoteinu he’evinu hirsha’nu.

We have sinned with our fathers, we have done iniquitously, we have dealt wickedly. Psalm 106:6

יָדַעְנוּ יְהוָה רִשְׁעֵנוּ עֲוֹן אֲבוֹתֵינוּ | כִּי חָטָאנוּ לָךְ׃

Yada’nu Yehovah rish’enu avon avoteinu | ki chatanu lach.

We acknowledge, O Yehovah, our wickedness, even the iniquity of our fathers; for we have sinned against Thee. Jeremiah 14:20

Eloheinu ve-Elohei avoteinu anachnu chatanu ashamnu bagadnu gazalnu dibarnu dofi he’evinu vihirsha’nu zadnu chamasnu tafalnu sheker ya’atznu atzat ra kizavnu latznu maradnu ni’atznu sararnu avinu fasha’nu tzararnu k’sheh oref hayinu rasha’nu shichatnu ta’inu ti’avnu. V’sor mimitzvotecha umimishpatecha hatovim v’lo shavah lanu.

Our God and God of our fathers, we have sinned,⁴⁰ become guilty, betrayed, robbed, slandered, done iniquitously, dealt wickedly, acted with malice, partaken in violence, forged lies, imparted evil counsel, lied, scorned, rebelled, provoked, acted stubbornly, committed iniquity, transgressed, oppressed, been stiff-necked, done evil, dealt corruptly, strayed, committed abominations, and turned aside from Thy good commandments and ordinances; and it hath not profited us.

וְעַתָּה אֱלֹהֵינוּ הָאֵל הַגָּדוֹל הַגִּבּוֹר וְהַנּוֹרָא שׁוֹמֵר הַבְּרִית וְהַחֶסֶד אַל יִמְעַט לְפָנֶיךָ אֵת כָּל הַתְּלָאָה אֲשֶׁר מְצָאַתְנוּ לִמְלָכֵינוּ לְשָׂרֵינוּ וּלְכֹהֲנֵינוּ וְלִנְבִיאֵנוּ וְלַאֲבֹתֵינוּ וּלְכָל עַמֶּךָ | מִימֵי מַלְכֵי אַשּׁוּר עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה׃

V’atah Eloheinu ha-El hagadol hagibor v’hanora shomer hab’rit v’hachesed al yim’at l’fanecha et kol hat’la’ah asher m’tza’atnu limlacheinu l’sareinu ulchohaneinu v’linvi’enu v’la’avoteinu ulchol amecha | mimei malchei ashur ad hayom hazeh.

Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who keepest covenant and lovingkindness, let not all the travail seem little before Thee, that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all Thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day.

וְאַתָּה צַדִּיק עַל כָּל הַבָּא עָלֵינוּ | כִּי אֱמֶת עָשִׂיתָ וַאֲנַחְנוּ הִרְשָׁעְנוּ׃

V’atah tzadik al kol haba aleinu | ki emet asita va’anachnu hirsha’nu.

Howbeit Thou art just in all that is come upon us; for Thou hast dealt truly, but we have done wickedly. Nehemiah 9:32–33

שׁוּב מֵחֲרוֹן אַפֶּךָ וְהִנָּחֵם עַל הָרָעָה לְעַמֶּךָ׃

Shuv mecharon apecha v’hinachem al hara’ah l’amecha.

Turn from Thy fierce wrath, and relent of this evil against Thy people. Exodus 32:12*

שׁוּב לְמַעַן עֲבָדֶיךָ שִׁבְטֵי נַחֲלָתֶךָ׃

Shuv l’ma’an avadecha shivtei nachalatecha.

Return for Thy servants’ sake, the tribes of Thine inheritance. Isaiah 63:17*

הֲשִׁיבֵנוּ יְהוָה אֵלֶיךָ וְנָשׁוּבָה חַדֵּשׁ יָמֵינוּ כְּקֶדֶם׃

Hashivenu Yehovah elecha v’nashuvah chadesh yameinu k’kedem.

Turn Thou us unto Thee, O Yehovah, and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old. Lamentations 5:21

וְסָלַחְתָּ לַעֲוֹנֵנוּ וּלְחַטָּאתֵנוּ וּנְחַלְתָּנוּ׃

V’salachta la’avonenu ulchatatenu unchaltanu.

And pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for Thine inheritance. Exodus 34:9*

בָּרוּךְ יְהוָה לְעוֹלָם אָמֵן וְאָמֵן׃

Baruch Yehovah l’olam amen v’amen.

לַמְנַצֵּחַ אֶל שֹׁשַׁנִּים | עֵדוּת לְאָסָף מִזְמוֹר׃

Lamnatzeach el shoshanim | edut l’asaf mizmor.

רֹעֵה יִשְׂרָאֵל הַאֲזִינָה נֹהֵג כַּצֹּאן יוֹסֵף | יֹשֵׁב הַכְּרוּבִים הוֹפִיעָה׃

Ro’eh Yisra’el ha’azinah noheg katzon yosef | yoshev hak’ruvim hofi’ah.

Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, Thou that leadest Joseph like a flock; Thou that art enthroned upon the cherubim, shine forth.

לִפְנֵי אֶפְרַיִם וּבִנְיָמִן וּמְנַשֶּׁה עוֹרְרָה אֶת גְּבוּרָתֶךָ | וּלְכָה לִישֻׁעָתָה לָּנוּ׃

Lifnei Efrayim uvinyamin u-M’nasheh or’rah et g’vuratecha | ulchah lishu’atah lanu.

Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh, stir up Thy might, and come to save us.

אֱלֹהִים הֲשִׁיבֵנוּ | וְהָאֵר פָּנֶיךָ וְנִוָּשֵׁעָה׃

Elohim hashivenu | v’ha’er panecha v’nivashe’ah.

O God, restore us; and cause Thy face to shine, and we shall be saved.

יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים צְבָאוֹת | עַד מָתַי עָשַׁנְתָּ בִּתְפִלַּת עַמֶּךָ׃

Yehovah Elohim tz’va’ot | ad matai ashanta bitfilat amecha.

O Yehovah God of hosts, how long wilt Thou be angry against the prayer of Thy people?

הֶאֱכַלְתָּם לֶחֶם דִּמְעָה | וַתַּשְׁקֵמוֹ בִּדְמָעוֹת שָׁלִישׁ׃

He’echaltam lechem dim’ah | vatashkemo bidma’ot shalish.

Thou hast fed them with the bread of tears, and given them tears to drink in large measure.

תְּשִׂימֵנוּ מָדוֹן לִשְׁכֵנֵינוּ | וְאֹיְבֵינוּ יִלְעֲגוּ לָמוֹ׃

T’simenu madon lishcheneinu | v’oyveinu yil’agu lamo.

Thou makest us a strife unto our neighbours; and our enemies mock as they please.

אֱלֹהִים צְבָאוֹת הֲשִׁיבֵנוּ | וְהָאֵר פָּנֶיךָ וְנִוָּשֵׁעָה׃

Elohim tz’va’ot hashivenu | v’ha’er panecha v’nivashe’ah.

O God of hosts, restore us; and cause Thy face to shine, and we shall be saved.

גֶּפֶן מִמִּצְרַיִם תַּסִּיעַ | תְּגָרֵשׁ גּוֹיִם וַתִּטָּעֶהָ׃

Gefen mi-Mitzrayim tasia | t’garesh goyim vatita’eha.

Thou didst pluck up a vine out of Egypt; Thou didst drive out the nations, and didst plant it.

פִּנִּיתָ לְפָנֶיהָ | וַתַּשְׁרֵשׁ שָׁרָשֶׁיהָ וַתְּמַלֵּא אָרֶץ׃

Pinita l’faneha | vatashresh sharasheha vat’malei aretz.

Thou didst clear a place before it, and it took deep root, and filled the land.

כָּסּוּ הָרִים צִלָּהּ | וַעֲנָפֶיהָ אַרְזֵי אֵל׃

Kasu harim tzilah | va’anafeha arzei El.

The mountains were covered with the shadow of it, and the mighty cedars with the boughs thereof.

תְּשַׁלַּח קְצִירֶהָ עַד יָם | וְאֶל נָהָר יוֹנְקוֹתֶיהָ׃

T’shalach k’tzireha ad yam | v’el nahar yonkoteha.

She sent out her branches unto the sea, and her shoots unto the River.

לָמָּה פָּרַצְתָּ גְדֵרֶיהָ | וְאָרוּהָ כָּל עֹבְרֵי דָרֶךְ׃

Lamah paratzta g’dereha | v’aruha kol ovrei darech.

Why hast Thou broken down her fences, so that all they that pass by the way do pluck her?

יְכַרְסְמֶנָּה חֲזִיר מִיָּעַר | וְזִיז שָׂדַי יִרְעֶנָּה׃

Y’chars’menah chazir miya’ar | v’ziz sadai yir’enah.

The boar out of the wood doth ravage it, that which moveth in the field feedeth on it.

אֱלֹהִים צְבָאוֹת שׁוּב נָא | הַבֵּט מִשָּׁמַיִם וּרְאֵה וּפְקֹד גֶּפֶן זֹאת׃

Elohim tz’va’ot shuv na | habet mishamayim ur’eh ufkod gefen zot.

O God of hosts, return, we beseech Thee; look from heaven, and behold, and be mindful of this vine,

וְכַנָּה אֲשֶׁר נָטְעָה יְמִינֶךָ | וְעַל בֵּן אִמַּצְתָּה לָּךְ׃

V’chanah asher nat’ah y’minecha | v’al ben imatztah lach.

And of the stock which Thy right hand hath planted, and the son⁴² that Thou madest strong for Thyself.

שְׂרֻפָה בָאֵשׁ כְּסוּחָה | מִגַּעֲרַת פָּנֶיךָ יֹאבֵדוּ׃

S’rufah va’esh k’suchah | miga’arat panecha yovedu.

It is burned with fire, it is cut down; they perish at the rebuke of Thy countenance.

תְּהִי יָדְךָ עַל אִישׁ יְמִינֶךָ | עַל בֶּן אָדָם אִמַּצְתָּ לָּךְ׃

T’hi yadcha al ish y’minecha | al ben adam imatzta lach.

Let Thy hand be upon the man of Thy right hand, upon the son of man whom Thou madest strong for Thyself.

וְלֹא נָסוֹג מִמֶּךָּ | תְּחַיֵּנוּ וּבְשִׁמְךָ נִקְרָא׃

V’lo nasog mimeka | t’chayenu uvshimcha nikra.

So shall we not turn back from Thee; quicken Thou us, and we will call upon Thy name.

יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים צְבָאוֹת הֲשִׁיבֵנוּ | הָאֵר פָּנֶיךָ וְנִוָּשֵׁעָה׃

Yehovah Elohim tz’va’ot hashivenu | ha’er panecha v’nivashe’ah.

O Yehovah God of hosts, restore us; cause Thy face to shine, and we shall be saved. Psalm 80:1–19 [1–20 Heb.]

הוֹשִׁיעֵנוּ יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ וְקַבְּצֵנוּ מִן הַגּוֹיִם | לְהֹדוֹת לְשֵׁם קָדְשֶׁךָ לְהִשְׁתַּבֵּחַ בִּתְהִלָּתֶךָ׃

Hoshi’enu Yehovah Eloheinu v’kab’tzenu min hagoyim | l’hodot l’shem kodshecha l’hishtabeach bithilatecha.

Save us, O Yehovah our God, and gather us from among the nations, that we may give thanks unto Thy holy name, that we may triumph in Thy praise.

בָּרוּךְ יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל מִן הָעוֹלָם וְעַד הָעוֹלָם וְאָמַר כָּל הָעָם אָמֵן הַלְלוּ יָהּ׃

Baruch Yehovah Elohei Yisra’el min ha’olam v’ad ha’olam v’amar kol ha’am amen hal’lu Yah.

Blessed be Yehovah, the God of Israel, from everlasting even to everlasting, and let all the people say: “Amen.” Hallelujah. Psalm 106:47–48

R’tzeh Yehovah l’hatzileni | Yehovah l’ezrati chushah.

Be pleased, O Yehovah, to deliver me; O Yehovah, make haste to help me. Psalm 40:13 [14 Heb.]

רָצִיתָ יְהוָה אַרְצֶךָ | שַׁבְתָּ שְׁבִית יַעֲקֹב׃

Ratzita Yehovah artzecha | shavta sh’vit Ya’akov.

Yehovah, Thou hast been favourable unto Thy land, Thou hast turned the captivity of Jacob.

נָשָׂאתָ עֲוֹן עַמֶּךָ | כִּסִּיתָ כָל חַטָּאתָם סֶלָה׃

Nasata avon amecha | kisita chol chatatam selah.

Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of Thy people, Thou hast pardoned all their sin. Selah.

אָסַפְתָּ כָל עֶבְרָתֶךָ | הֱשִׁיבוֹתָ מֵחֲרוֹן אַפֶּךָ׃

Asafta chol evratecha | heshivota mecharon apecha.

Thou hast withdrawn all Thy wrath; Thou hast turned from the fierceness of Thine anger.

שׁוּבֵנוּ אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׁעֵנוּ | וְהָפֵר כַּעַסְךָ עִמָּנוּ׃

Shuvenu Elohei yish’enu | v’hafer ka’ascha imanu.

Restore us, O God of our salvation, and cause Thine indignation toward us to cease.

הַלְעוֹלָם תֶּאֱנַף בָּנוּ | תִּמְשֹׁךְ אַפְּךָ לְדֹר וָדֹר׃

Halolam te’enaf banu | timshoch ap’cha l’dor vador.

Wilt Thou be angry with us for ever? Wilt Thou draw out Thine anger to all generations?

הֲלֹא אַתָּה תָּשׁוּב תְּחַיֵּנוּ | וְעַמְּךָ יִשְׂמְחוּ בָךְ׃

Halo atah tashuv t’chayenu | v’am’cha yism’chu vach.

Wilt Thou not quicken us again, that Thy people may rejoice in Thee?

הַרְאֵנוּ יְהוָה חַסְדֶּךָ | וְיֶשְׁעֲךָ תִּתֶּן לָנוּ׃

Har’enu Yehovah chasdecha | v’yesh’acha titen lanu.

Show us Thy lovingkindness, O Yehovah, and grant us Thy salvation.

אֶשְׁמְעָה מַה יְדַבֵּר הָאֵל יְהוָה | כִּי יְדַבֵּר שָׁלוֹם אֶל עַמּוֹ וְאֶל חֲסִידָיו וְאַל יָשׁוּבוּ לְכִסְלָה׃

Eshm’ah mah y’daber ha-El Yehovah | ki y’daber shalom el amo v’el chasidav v’al yashuvu l’chislah.

I will hear what God Yehovah will speak; for He will speak peace unto His people, and to His saints;⁴³ but let them not turn back to folly.

אַךְ קָרוֹב לִירֵאָיו יִשְׁעוֹ | לִשְׁכֹּן כָּבוֹד בְּאַרְצֵנוּ׃

Ach karov lire’av yisho | lishkon kavod b’artzenu.

Surely His salvation is nigh them that fear Him; that glory may dwell in our land.

חֶסֶד וֶאֱמֶת נִפְגָּשׁוּ | צֶדֶק וְשָׁלוֹם נָשָׁקוּ׃

Chesed ve’emet nifgashu | tzedek v’shalom nashaku.

Lovingkindness and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.

אֱמֶת מֵאֶרֶץ תִּצְמָח | וְצֶדֶק מִשָּׁמַיִם נִשְׁקָף׃

Emet me’eretz titzmach | v’tzedek mishamayim nishkaf.

Truth springeth out of the earth; and righteousness hath looked down from heaven.

גַּם יְהוָה יִתֵּן הַטּוֹב | וְאַרְצֵנוּ תִּתֵּן יְבוּלָהּ׃

Gam Yehovah yiten hatov | v’artzenu titen y’vulah.

Yea, Yehovah will give that which is good; and our land shall yield her produce.

צֶדֶק לְפָנָיו יְהַלֵּךְ | וְיָשֵׂם לְדֶרֶךְ פְּעָמָיו׃

Tzedek l’fanav y’halech | v’yasem l’derech p’amav.

Righteousness shall go before Him, and shall make His footsteps a way. Psalm 85:1–13 [2–14 Heb.]

בָּרוּךְ יְהוָה לְעוֹלָם אָמֵן וְאָמֵן׃

וְלֹא קָם נָבִיא עוֹד בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל כְּמֹשֶׁה | אֲשֶׁר יְדָעוֹ יְהוָה פָּנִים אֶל פָּנִים׃

V’lo kam navi od b’Yisra’el k’Moshe | asher y’da’o Yehovah panim el panim.

And there hath not arisen a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom Yehovah knew face to face. Deuteronomy 34:10

תְּפִלָּה לְמֹשֶׁה אִישׁ הָאֱלֹהִים | אֲדֹנָי מָעוֹן אַתָּה הָיִיתָ לָּנוּ בְּדֹר וָדֹר׃

T’filah l’Moshe ish ha-Elohim | Adonai ma’on atah hayita lanu b’dor vador.

A Prayer of Moses the man of God. Lord, Thou hast been our dwelling-place in all generations.

בְּטֶרֶם הָרִים יֻלָּדוּ וַתְּחוֹלֵל אֶרֶץ וְתֵבֵל | וּמֵעוֹלָם עַד עוֹלָם אַתָּה אֵל׃

B’terem harim yuladu vat’cholel eretz v’tevel | ume’olam ad olam atah El.

Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever Thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, Thou art God.

תָּשֵׁב אֱנוֹשׁ עַד דַּכָּא | וַתֹּאמֶר שׁוּבוּ בְנֵי אָדָם׃

Tashev enosh ad daka | vatomer shuvu v’nei adam.

Thou turnest man to contrition; and sayest: ‘Return, ye children of men.’

כִּי אֶלֶף שָׁנִים בְּעֵינֶיךָ כְּיוֹם אֶתְמוֹל כִּי יַעֲבֹר | וְאַשְׁמוּרָה בַלָּיְלָה׃

Ki elef shanim b’einecha k’yom etmol ki ya’avor | v’ashmurah valaylah.

For a thousand years in Thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.

זְרַמְתָּם שֵׁנָה יִהְיוּ | בַּבֹּקֶר כֶּחָצִיר יַחֲלֹף׃

Z’ramtam shenah yihyu | baboker kechatzir yachalof.

Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep; in the morning they are like grass which groweth up.

בַּבֹּקֶר יָצִיץ וְחָלָף | לָעֶרֶב יְמוֹלֵל וְיָבֵשׁ׃

Baboker yatzitz v’chalaf | la’erev y’molel v’yavesh.

In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down, and withereth.

כִּי כָלִינוּ בְאַפֶּךָ | וּבַחֲמָתְךָ נִבְהָלְנוּ׃

Ki chalinu v’apecha | uvachamatcha nivhalnu.

For we are consumed in Thine anger, and by Thy wrath are we hurried away.

שַׁתָּה עֲוֹנֹתֵינוּ לְנֶגְדֶּךָ | עֲלֻמֵנוּ לִמְאוֹר פָּנֶיךָ׃

Shatah avonoteinu l’negdecha | alumenu limor panecha.

Thou hast set our iniquities before Thee, our secret sins in the light of Thy countenance.

כִּי כָל יָמֵינוּ פָּנוּ בְעֶבְרָתֶךָ | כִּלִּינוּ שָׁנֵינוּ כְמוֹ הֶגֶה׃

Ki chol yameinu panu v’evratecha | kilinu shaneinu ch’mo hegeh.

For all our days are passed away in Thy wrath; we bring our years to an end as a tale that is told.

יְמֵי שְׁנוֹתֵינוּ בָהֶם שִׁבְעִים שָׁנָה וְאִם בִּגְבוּרֹת שְׁמוֹנִים שָׁנָה וְרָהְבָּם עָמָל וָאָוֶן | כִּי גָז חִישׁ וַנָּעֻפָה׃

Y’mei sh’noteinu vahem shiv’im shanah v’im bigvurot sh’monim shanah v’rahbam amal va’aven | ki gaz chish vana’ufah.

The days of our years are threescore years and ten, or even by reason of strength fourscore years; yet is their pride but travail and vanity; for it is speedily gone, and we fly away.

מִי יוֹדֵעַ עֹז אַפֶּךָ | וּכְיִרְאָתְךָ עֶבְרָתֶךָ׃

Mi yodea oz apecha | uchyir’atcha evratecha.

Who knoweth the power of Thine anger, and Thy wrath according to the fear that is due unto Thee?

לִמְנוֹת יָמֵינוּ כֵּן הוֹדַע | וְנָבִא לְבַב חָכְמָה׃

Limnot yameinu ken hoda | v’navi l’vav chochmah.

So teach us to number our days, that we may get us a heart of wisdom.

שׁוּבָה יְהוָה עַד מָתָי | וְהִנָּחֵם עַל עֲבָדֶיךָ׃

Shuvah Yehovah ad matai | v’hinachem al avadecha.

Return, O Yehovah; how long? And relent¹⁷ concerning Thy servants.

שַׂבְּעֵנוּ בַבֹּקֶר חַסְדֶּךָ | וּנְרַנְּנָה וְנִשְׂמְחָה בְּכָל יָמֵינוּ׃

Sab’enu vaboker chasdecha | unran’nah v’nism’chah b’chol yameinu.

O satisfy us in the morning with Thy lovingkindness; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

שַׂמְּחֵנוּ כִּימוֹת עִנִּיתָנוּ | שְׁנוֹת רָאִינוּ רָעָה׃

Sam’chenu kimot initanu | sh’not ra’inu ra’ah.

Make us glad according to the days wherein Thou hast afflicted us, according to the years wherein we have seen evil.

יֵרָאֶה אֶל עֲבָדֶיךָ פָעֳלֶךָ | וַהֲדָרְךָ עַל בְּנֵיהֶם׃

Yera’eh el avadecha fo’olecha | vahadarcha al b’neihem.

Let Thy work appear unto Thy servants, and Thy glory upon their children.

וִיהִי נֹעַם אֲדֹנָי אֱלֹהֵינוּ עָלֵינוּ | וּמַעֲשֵׂה יָדֵינוּ כּוֹנְנָה עָלֵינוּ וּמַעֲשֵׂה יָדֵינוּ כּוֹנְנֵהוּ׃

Vihi no’am Adonai Eloheinu aleinu | uma’aseh yadeinu kon’nah aleinu uma’aseh yadeinu kon’nehu.

And let the graciousness of the Lord our God be upon us; establish Thou also upon us the work of our hands; yea, the work of our hands establish Thou it. Psalm 90

אַל תִּנְאַץ לְמַעַן שִׁמְךָ אַל תְּנַבֵּל כִּסֵּא כְבוֹדֶךָ | זְכֹר אַל תָּפֵר בְּרִיתְךָ אִתָּנוּ׃

Al tin’atz l’ma’an shimcha al t’nabel kisei ch’vodecha | z’chor al tafer b’ritcha itanu.

Do not spurn us, for Thy name’s sake, do not dishonour the throne of Thy glory; remember, break not Thy covenant with us. Jeremiah 14:21

זְכֹר יְהוָה מֶה הָיָה לָנוּ הַבִּיטָה וּרְאֵה אֶת חֶרְפָּתֵנוּ׃

Z’chor Yehovah meh hayah lanu habitah ur’eh et cherpatenu.

Remember, O Yehovah, what is come upon us; behold, and see our reproach. Lamentations 5:1

הַבֵּט מִשָּׁמַיִם וּרְאֵה מִזְּבֻל קָדְשְׁךָ וְתִפְאַרְתֶּךָ | אַיֵּה קִנְאָתְךָ וּגְבוּרֹתֶךָ הֲמוֹן מֵעֶיךָ וְרַחֲמֶיךָ אֵלַי הִתְאַפָּקוּ׃ כִּי אַתָּה אָבִינוּ כִּי אַבְרָהָם לֹא יְדָעָנוּ וְיִשְׂרָאֵל לֹא יַכִּירָנוּ | אַתָּה יְהוָה אָבִינוּ גֹּאֲלֵנוּ מֵעוֹלָם שְׁמֶךָ׃

Habet mishamayim ur’eh miz’vul kodsh’cha v’tif’artecha | ayeh kin’atcha ugvurotecha hamon me’echa v’rachamecha elai hit’apaku. Ki atah avinu ki avraham lo y’da’anu v’Yisra’el lo yakiranu | atah Yehovah avinu go’alenu me’olam sh’mecha.

Look down from heaven, and see, even from Thy holy and glorious habitation; where is Thy zeal and Thy mighty acts, the yearning of Thy heart and Thy compassions, now restrained toward me? For Thou art our Father; for Abraham knoweth us not, and Israel doth not acknowledge us; Thou, O Yehovah, art our Father, our Redeemer from everlasting is Thy name. Isaiah 63:15–16

וְעַתָּה יְהוָה אָבִינוּ אָתָּה | אֲנַחְנוּ הַחֹמֶר וְאַתָּה יֹצְרֵנוּ וּמַעֲשֵׂה יָדְךָ כֻּלָּנוּ׃ אַל תִּקְצֹף יְהוָה עַד מְאֹד וְאַל לָעַד תִּזְכֹּר עָוֹן | הֵן הַבֶּט נָא עַמְּךָ כֻלָּנוּ׃ עָרֵי קָדְשְׁךָ הָיוּ מִדְבָּר | צִיּוֹן מִדְבָּר הָיָתָה יְרוּשָׁלִַם שְׁמָמָה׃ בֵּית קָדְשֵׁנוּ וְתִפְאַרְתֵּנוּ אֲשֶׁר הִלְלוּךָ אֲבֹתֵינוּ הָיָה לִשְׂרֵפַת אֵשׁ | וְכָל מַחֲמַדֵּינוּ הָיָה לְחָרְבָּה׃

V’atah Yehovah avinu atah | anachnu hachomer v’atah yotzrenu uma’aseh yadcha kulanu. Al tiktzof Yehovah ad m’od v’al la’ad tizkor avon | hen habet na am’cha chulanu. Arei kodsh’cha hayu midbar | Tziyon midbar hayatah Y’rushalayim sh’mamah. Beit kadshenu v’tif’artenu asher hil’lucha avoteinu hayah lisrefat esh | v’chol machamadeinu hayah l’charbah.

But now, O Yehovah, Thou art our Father; we are the clay, and Thou our potter, and we all are the work of Thy hand. Be not wroth very sore, O Yehovah, neither remember iniquity for ever; behold, look, we beseech Thee, we are all Thy people. Thy holy cities are become a wilderness, Zion is become a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation. Our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised Thee, is burned with fire; and all our pleasant things are laid waste. Isaiah 64:8–11 [7–10 Heb.]

עַל חִלּוּל שִׁמְךָ הַגָּדוֹל וְחִלּוּל תּוֹרָתְךָ הַתְּמִימָה וְחִלּוּל וְחָרְבָּן בֵּית מִקְדָּשְׁךָ הַשָּׁמֵם׃

Al chilul shimcha hagadol v’chilul toratcha hat’mimah v’chilul v’charban beit mikdashcha hashamem.

For the profaning of Thy great name, and the profaning of Thy perfect Torah, and the profaning and the ruin of the house of Thy sanctuary, which is desolate:

הַעַל אֵלֶּה תִתְאַפַּק יְהוָה | תֶּחֱשֶׁה וּתְעַנֵּנוּ עַד מְאֹד׃

Ha’al eleh tit’apak Yehovah | techesheh ut’anenu ad m’od.

Wilt Thou refrain Thyself for these things, O Yehovah? Wilt Thou hold Thy peace, and afflict us very sore? Isaiah 64:12 [11 Heb.]

מִקְוֵה יִשְׂרָאֵל מוֹשִׁיעוֹ בְּעֵת צָרָה | לָמָּה תִהְיֶה כְּגֵר בָּאָרֶץ וּכְאֹרֵחַ נָטָה לָלוּן׃

Mikveh Yisra’el moshi’o b’et tzarah | lamah tihyeh k’ger ba’aretz uch’oreach natah lalun.

O Thou hope of Israel, the Saviour thereof in time of trouble, why shouldest Thou be as a stranger in the land, and as a wayfaring man that turneth aside to tarry for a night?

לָמָּה תִהְיֶה כְּאִישׁ נִדְהָם כְּגִבּוֹר לֹא יוּכַל לְהוֹשִׁיעַ | וְאַתָּה בְקִרְבֵּנוּ יְהוָה וְשִׁמְךָ עָלֵינוּ נִקְרָא אַל תַּנִּחֵנוּ׃

Lamah tihyeh k’ish nidham k’gibor lo yuchal l’hoshia | v’atah v’kirbenu Yehovah v’shimcha aleinu nikra al tanichenu.

Why shouldest Thou be as a man overcome, as a mighty man that cannot save? Yet Thou, O Yehovah, art in the midst of us, and Thy name is called upon us; leave us not. Jeremiah 14:8–9

וַתֹּאמֶר צִיּוֹן עֲזָבַנִי יְהוָה | וַאדֹנָי שְׁכֵחָנִי׃

Vatomer Tziyon azavani Yehovah | va-Adonai sh’chechani.

But Zion said: “Yehovah hath forsaken me, and the Lord hath forgotten me.”

הֲתִשְׁכַּח אִשָּׁה עוּלָהּ מֵרַחֵם בֶּן בִּטְנָהּ | גַּם אֵלֶּה תִשְׁכַּחְנָה וְאָנֹכִי לֹא אֶשְׁכָּחֵךְ׃

Hatishkach ishah ulah merachem ben bitnah | gam eleh tishkachnah v’anochi lo eshkachech.

Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yea, these may forget, yet will not I forget thee. Isaiah 49:14–15

עַד אָנָה יְהוָה תִּשְׁכָּחֵנִי נֶצַח | עַד אָנָה תַּסְתִּיר אֶת פָּנֶיךָ מִמֶּנִּי׃

Ad anah Yehovah tishkacheni netzach | ad anah tastir et panecha mimeni.

How long, O Yehovah, wilt Thou forget me for ever? How long wilt Thou hide Thy face from me?

עַד אָנָה אָשִׁית עֵצוֹת בְּנַפְשִׁי יָגוֹן בִּלְבָבִי יוֹמָם | עַד אָנָה יָרוּם אֹיְבִי עָלָי׃

Ad anah ashit etzot b’nafshi yagon bilvavi yomam | ad anah yarum oyvi alai.

How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart by day? How long shall mine enemy be exalted over me?

הַבִּיטָה עֲנֵנִי יְהוָה אֱלֹהָי | הָאִירָה עֵינַי פֶּן אִישַׁן הַמָּוֶת׃

Habitah aneni Yehovah Elohai | ha’irah einai pen ishan hamavet.

Behold Thou, and answer me, O Yehovah my God; lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death;

פֶּן יֹאמַר אֹיְבִי יְכָלְתִּיו | צָרַי יָגִילוּ כִּי אֶמּוֹט׃

Pen yomar oyvi y’chaltiv | tzarai yagilu ki emot.

Lest mine enemy say: “I have prevailed against him”; lest mine adversaries rejoice when I am moved.

וַאֲנִי בְּחַסְדְּךָ בָטַחְתִּי יָגֵל לִבִּי בִּישׁוּעָתֶךָ | אָשִׁירָה לַיהוָה כִּי גָמַל עָלָי׃

Va’ani b’chasd’cha vatachti yagel libi bishu’atecha | ashirah la-Yehovah ki gamal alai.

But as for me, in Thy lovingkindness do I trust; my heart shall rejoice in Thy salvation. I will sing unto Yehovah, because He hath dealt bountifully with me. Psalm 13:1–6 [2–6 Heb.]

אָשִׁירָה לַיהוָה בְּחַיָּי | אֲזַמְּרָה לֵאלֹהַי בְּעוֹדִי׃

Ashirah la-Yehovah b’chayai | azam’rah le-Elohai b’odi.

I will sing unto Yehovah as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have any being.

יֶעֱרַב עָלָיו שִׂיחִי | אָנֹכִי אֶשְׂמַח בַּיהוָה׃

Ye’erav alav sichi | anochi esmach ba-Yehovah.

Let my musing be sweet unto Him; as for me, I will rejoice in Yehovah. Psalm 104:33–34

וַאֲנַחְנוּ נְבָרֵךְ יָהּ מֵעַתָּה וְעַד עוֹלָם הַלְלוּ יָהּ׃

Va’anachnu n’varech Yah me’atah v’ad olam hal’lu Yah.

But we will bless Yehovah²⁷ from this time forth and for ever. Hallelujah. Psalm 115:18

בָּרוּךְ יְהוָה לְעוֹלָם אָמֵן וְאָמֵן׃

Baruch Yehovah l’olam amen v’amen.

Blessed be Yehovah for evermore. Amen, and Amen. Psalm 89:52 [53 Heb.]

מָה רַב טוּבְךָ אֲשֶׁר צָפַנְתָּ לִּירֵאֶיךָ | פָּעַלְתָּ לַחֹסִים בָּךְ נֶגֶד בְּנֵי אָדָם׃

Mah rav tuvcha asher tzafanta lire’echa | pa’alta lachosim bach neged b’nei adam.

Oh how abundant is Thy goodness, which Thou hast laid up for them that fear Thee; which Thou hast wrought for them that take their refuge in Thee, in the sight of the sons of men! Psalm 31:19 [20 Heb.]

מַה יָּקָר חַסְדְּךָ אֱלֹהִים | וּבְנֵי אָדָם בְּצֵל כְּנָפֶיךָ יֶחֱסָיוּן׃

Mah yakar chasd’cha Elohim | uvnei adam b’tzel k’nafecha yechesayun.

How precious is Thy lovingkindness, O God! and the children of men take refuge in the shadow of Thy wings.

יִרְוְיֻן מִדֶּשֶׁן בֵּיתֶךָ | וְנַחַל עֲדָנֶיךָ תַשְׁקֵם׃

Yirv’yun mideshen beitecha | v’nachal adanecha tashkem.

They are abundantly satisfied with the fatness of Thy house; and Thou makest them drink of the river of Thy pleasures.

כִּי עִמְּךָ מְקוֹר חַיִּים | בְּאוֹרְךָ נִרְאֶה אוֹר׃

Ki im’cha m’kor chayim | b’orcha nir’eh or.

For with Thee is the fountain of life; in Thy light do we see light.

מְשֹׁךְ חַסְדְּךָ לְיֹדְעֶיךָ | וְצִדְקָתְךָ לְיִשְׁרֵי לֵב׃

M’shoch chasd’cha l’yod’echa | v’tzidkatcha l’yishrei lev.

O continue Thy lovingkindness unto them that know Thee; and Thy righteousness to the upright in heart. Psalm 36:7–10 [8–11 Heb.]

Thy righteousness also, O God, which reacheth unto high heaven; Thou who hast done great things, O God, who is like unto Thee? Psalm 71:19

אֵין קָדוֹשׁ כַּיהוָה כִּי אֵין בִּלְתֶּךָ | וְאֵין צוּר כֵּאלֹהֵינוּ׃

Ein kadosh ka-Yehovah ki ein biltecha | v’ein tzur ke-Eloheinu.

There is none holy as Yehovah, for there is none beside Thee; neither is there any rock like our God. 1 Samuel 2:2

וְאַתָּה קָדוֹשׁ | יוֹשֵׁב תְּהִלּוֹת יִשְׂרָאֵל׃

V’atah kadosh | yoshev t’hilot Yisra’el.

Yet Thou art holy, O Thou that art enthroned upon the praises of Israel. Psalm 22:3 [4 Heb.]

אֶת שַׁבְּתֹתַי תִּשְׁמֹרוּ וּמִקְדָּשִׁי תִּירָאוּ | אֲנִי יְהוָה׃

Et shab’totai tishmoru umikdashi tira’u | ani Yehovah.

Ye shall keep My sabbaths, and reverence My sanctuary: I am Yehovah. Leviticus 19:30

אִישׁ אִמּוֹ וְאָבִיו תִּירָאוּ וְאֶת שַׁבְּתֹתַי תִּשְׁמֹרוּ | אֲנִי יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם׃

Ish imo v’aviv tira’u v’et shab’totai tishmoru | ani Yehovah Eloheichem.

Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father, and ye shall keep My sabbaths: I am Yehovah your God. Leviticus 19:3

אֲנִי יְהוָה קְדוֹשְׁכֶם | בּוֹרֵא יִשְׂרָאֵל מַלְכְּכֶם׃

Ani Yehovah k’doshchem | borei Yisra’el malk’chem.

I am Yehovah, your Holy One, the Creator of Israel, your King. Isaiah 43:15

וְהִתְגַּדִּלְתִּי וְהִתְקַדִּשְׁתִּי וְנוֹדַעְתִּי לְעֵינֵי גּוֹיִם רַבִּים | וְיָדְעוּ כִּי אֲנִי יְהוָה׃

V’hitgadilti v’hitkadishti v’noda’ti l’einei goyim rabim | v’yadu ki ani Yehovah.

Thus will I magnify Myself, and sanctify Myself, and I will make Myself known in the eyes of many nations; and they shall know that I am Yehovah. Ezekiel 38:23

וְאֶת שֵׁם קָדְשִׁי אוֹדִיעַ בְּתוֹךְ עַמִּי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְלֹא אַחֵל אֶת שֵׁם קָדְשִׁי עוֹד | וְיָדְעוּ הַגּוֹיִם כִּי אֲנִי יְהוָה קָדוֹשׁ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל׃

V’et shem kodshi odia b’toch ami Yisra’el v’lo achel et shem kodshi od | v’yadu hagoyim ki ani Yehovah kadosh b’Yisra’el.

And My holy name will I make known in the midst of My people Israel; neither will I suffer My holy name to be profaned any more; and the nations shall know that I am Yehovah, the Holy One in Israel. Ezekiel 39:7

גֹּאֲלֵנוּ יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת שְׁמוֹ | קְדוֹשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל׃

Go’alenu Yehovah tz’va’ot sh’mo | k’dosh Yisra’el.

Our Redeemer, Yehovah of hosts is His name, the Holy One of Israel. Isaiah 47:4

מָלַךְ אֱלֹהִים עַל גּוֹיִם | אֱלֹהִים יָשַׁב עַל כִּסֵּא קָדְשׁוֹ׃

Malach Elohim al goyim | Elohim yashav al kisei kodsho.

God reigneth over the nations; God sitteth upon His holy throne. Psalm 47:8 [9 Heb.]

וַיהוָה לְעוֹלָם יֵשֵׁב | כּוֹנֵן לַמִּשְׁפָּט כִּסְאוֹ׃

Va-Yehovah l’olam yeshev | konen lamishpat kiso.

But Yehovah is enthroned for ever; He hath established His throne for judgment. Psalm 9:7 [8 Heb.]

יֹשֵׁב עַל כִּסֵּא רָם וְנִשָּׂא | וְשׁוּלָיו מְלֵאִים אֶת הַהֵיכָל׃

Yoshev al kisei ram v’nisa | v’shulav m’le’im et haheichal.

Sitting upon a throne high and lifted up, and His train filled the temple.

שְׂרָפִים עֹמְדִים מִמַּעַל לוֹ שֵׁשׁ כְּנָפַיִם שֵׁשׁ כְּנָפַיִם לְאֶחָד | בִּשְׁתַּיִם יְכַסֶּה פָנָיו וּבִשְׁתַּיִם יְכַסֶּה רַגְלָיו וּבִשְׁתַּיִם יְעוֹפֵף׃

S’rafim omdim mima’al lo shesh k’nafayim shesh k’nafayim l’echad | bishtayim y’chaseh fanav uvishtayim y’chaseh raglav uvishtayim y’ofef.

Above Him stood the seraphim; each one had six wings: with twain he covered his face and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.

וְקָרָא זֶה אֶל זֶה וְאָמַר קָדוֹשׁ קָדוֹשׁ קָדוֹשׁ יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת | מְלֹא כָל הָאָרֶץ כְּבוֹדוֹ׃

V’kara zeh el zeh v’amar kadosh kadosh kadosh Yehovah tz’va’ot | m’lo chol ha’aretz k’vodo.

And one called unto another, and said: Holy, holy, holy, is Yehovah of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory.⁴⁴ Isaiah 6:1*–3

וִיהוּדָה לְעוֹלָם תֵּשֵׁב | וִירוּשָׁלִַם לְדוֹר וָדוֹר׃

Vihudah l’olam teshev | vi-Y’rushalayim l’dor vador.

But Judah shall be inhabited for ever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation.

וְנִקֵּיתִי דָּמָם לֹא נִקֵּיתִי | וַיהוָה שֹׁכֵן בְּצִיּוֹן׃

V’nikeiti damam lo nikeiti | va-Yehovah shochen b’Tziyon.

And I will hold as innocent their blood that I have not held as innocent; and Yehovah dwelleth in Zion. Joel 3:20–21 [4:20–21 Heb.]

כִּי בָחַר יְהוָה בְּצִיּוֹן | אִוָּהּ לְמוֹשָׁב לוֹ׃

Ki vachar Yehovah b’Tziyon | ivah l’moshav lo.

For Yehovah hath chosen Zion; He hath desired it for His habitation:

זֹאת מְנוּחָתִי עֲדֵי עַד | פֹּה אֵשֵׁב כִּי אִוִּתִיהָ׃

Zot m’nuchati adei ad | po eshev ki ivitiha.

“This is My resting-place for ever; here will I dwell; for I have desired it.” Psalm 132:13–14

כִּי בָנָה יְהוָה צִיּוֹן | נִרְאָה בִּכְבוֹדוֹ׃

Ki vanah Yehovah Tziyon | nir’ah bichvodo.

When Yehovah hath built up Zion, when He hath appeared in His glory. Psalm 102:16 [17 Heb.]

בָּרוּךְ כְּבוֹד יְהוָה מִמְּקוֹמוֹ׃

Baruch k’vod Yehovah mim’komo.

Blessed be the glory of Yehovah from His place. Ezekiel 3:12*

בַּמָּה אֲקַדֵּם יְהוָה אִכַּף לֵאלֹהֵי מָרוֹם | הַאֲקַדְּמֶנּוּ בְעוֹלוֹת בַּעֲגָלִים בְּנֵי שָׁנָה׃

Bamah akadem Yehovah ikaf le-Elohei marom | ha’akad’menu v’olot ba’agalim b’nei shanah.

“Wherewith shall I come before Yehovah, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before Him with burnt-offerings, with calves of a year old?

הֲיִרְצֶה יְהוָה בְּאַלְפֵי אֵילִים בְּרִבְבוֹת נַחֲלֵי שָׁמֶן | הַאֶתֵּן בְּכוֹרִי פִּשְׁעִי פְּרִי בִטְנִי חַטַּאת נַפְשִׁי׃

Hayirtzeh Yehovah b’alfei eilim b’riv’vot nachalei shamen | ha’eten b’chori pish’i p’ri vitni chatat nafshi.

Will Yehovah be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my first-born for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?”

הִגִּיד לְךָ אָדָם מַה טּוֹב | וּמָה יְהוָה דּוֹרֵשׁ מִמְּךָ כִּי אִם עֲשׂוֹת מִשְׁפָּט וְאַהֲבַת חֶסֶד וְהַצְנֵעַ לֶכֶת עִם אֱלֹהֶיךָ׃

Higid l’cha adam mah tov | umah Yehovah doresh mim’cha ki im asot mishpat v’ahavat chesed v’hatznea lechet im Elohecha.

It hath been told thee, O man, what is good, and what Yehovah doth require of thee: only to do justly, and to love lovingkindness, and to walk humbly with thy God. Micah 6:6–8

שְׁמַע אֵלַי יַעֲקֹב וְיִשְׂרָאֵל מְקֹרָאִי | אֲנִי הוּא אֲנִי רִאשׁוֹן אַף אֲנִי אַחֲרוֹן׃

Sh’ma elai Ya’akov v’Yisra’el m’kora’i | ani hu ani rishon af ani acharon.

Hearken unto Me, O Jacob, and Israel My called: I am He; I am the first, I also am the last. Isaiah 48:12

שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל | יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ יְהוָה אֶחָד׃

Sh’ma Yisra’el | Yehovah Eloheinu Yehovah echad.

Hear, O Israel: Yehovah is our God, Yehovah is one. Deuteronomy 6:4

אֶחָד אֱלֹהֵינוּ גָּדוֹל אֲדֹנֵינוּ | קָדוֹשׁ וְנוֹרָא שְׁמוֹ לְעוֹלָם וָעֶד׃

Echad Eloheinu gadol adoneinu | kadosh v’nora sh’mo l’olam va’ed.

One is our God, great is our Lord; holy and awesome is His name forever more.

וְאָהַבְתָּ אֵת יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ | בְּכָל לְבָבְךָ וּבְכָל נַפְשְׁךָ וּבְכָל מְאֹדֶךָ׃ וְהָיוּ הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוְּךָ הַיּוֹם עַל לְבָבֶךָ׃ וְשִׁנַּנְתָּם לְבָנֶיךָ וְדִבַּרְתָּ בָּם | בְּשִׁבְתְּךָ בְּבֵיתֶךָ וּבְלֶכְתְּךָ בַדֶּרֶךְ וּבְשָׁכְבְּךָ וּבְקוּמֶךָ׃ וּקְשַׁרְתָּם לְאוֹת עַל יָדֶךָ | וְהָיוּ לְטֹטָפֹת בֵּין עֵינֶיךָ׃ וּכְתַבְתָּם עַל מְזוּזֹת בֵּיתֶךָ וּבִשְׁעָרֶיךָ׃

V’ahavta et Yehovah Elohecha | b’chol l’vavcha uvchol nafsh’cha uvchol m’odecha. V’hayu had’varim ha’eleh asher anochi m’tzav’cha hayom al l’vavecha. V’shinantam l’vanecha v’dibarta bam | b’shivt’cha b’veitecha uvlecht’cha vaderech uvshochb’cha uvkumecha. Ukshartam l’ot al yadecha | v’hayu l’totafot bein einecha. Uchtavtam al m’zuzot beitecha uvish’arecha.

And thou shalt love Yehovah thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be upon thy heart; and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thy hand, and they shall be for frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the door-posts of thy house, and upon thy gates.⁴⁵ Deuteronomy 6:5–9

V’natati m’tar artz’chem b’ito yoreh umalkosh | v’asafta d’ganecha v’tiroshcha v’yitzharecha. V’natati esev b’sadcha livhemtecha | v’achalta v’sava’ta. Hishamru lachem pen yifteh l’vavchem | v’sartem va’avadtem Elohim acherim v’hishtachavitem lahem. V’charah af Yehovah bachem v’atzar et hashamayim v’lo yihyeh matar v’ha’adamah lo titen et y’vulah | va’avadtem m’herah me’al ha’aretz hatovah asher Yehovah noten lachem. V’samtem et d’varai eleh al l’vavchem v’al nafsh’chem | ukshartem otam l’ot al yedchem v’hayu l’totafot bein eineichem. V’limadtem otam et b’neichem l’daber bam | b’shivt’cha b’veitecha uvlecht’cha vaderech uvshochb’cha uvkumecha. Uchtavtam al m’zuzot beitecha uvish’arecha. And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto My commandments which I command you this day, to love Yehovah your God, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul, that I will give the rain of your land in its season, the former rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil. And I will give grass in thy fields for thy cattle, and thou shalt eat and be satisfied. Take heed to yourselves, lest your heart be deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, and bow down unto them; and the anger of Yehovah be kindled against you, and He shut up the heaven, so that there shall be no rain, and the ground shall not yield her fruit; and ye perish quickly from off the good land which Yehovah giveth you. Therefore shall ye lay up these My words in your heart and in your soul; and ye shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes. And ye shall teach them your children, talking of them, when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt write them upon the door-posts of thy house, and upon thy gates; that your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, upon the land which Yehovah swore unto your fathers to give them, as the days of the heavens above the earth. וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר׃ דַּבֵּר אֶל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאָמַרְתָּ אֲלֵהֶם וְעָשׂוּ לָהֶם צִיצִת עַל כַּנְפֵי בִגְדֵיהֶם לְדֹרֹתָם | וְנָתְנוּ עַל צִיצִת הַכָּנָף פְּתִיל תְּכֵלֶת׃ וְהָיָה לָכֶם לְצִיצִת וּרְאִיתֶם אֹתוֹ וּזְכַרְתֶּם אֶת כָּל מִצְוֺת יְהוָה וַעֲשִׂיתֶם אֹתָם | וְלֹא תָתֻרוּ אַחֲרֵי לְבַבְכֶם וְאַחֲרֵי עֵינֵיכֶם אֲשֶׁר אַתֶּם זֹנִים אַחֲרֵיהֶם׃ לְמַעַן תִּזְכְּרוּ וַעֲשִׂיתֶם אֶת כָּל מִצְוֺתָי | וִהְיִיתֶם קְדֹשִׁים לֵאלֹהֵיכֶם׃ אֲנִי יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם אֲשֶׁר הוֹצֵאתִי אֶתְכֶם מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם לִהְיוֹת לָכֶם לֵאלֹהִים | אֲנִי יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם׃

Vayomer Yehovah el Moshe lemor. Daber el b’nei Yisra’el v’amarta alehem v’asu lahem tzitzit al kanfei vigdeihem l’dorotam | v’natnu al tzitzit hakanaf p’til t’chelet. V’hayah lachem l’tzitzit ur’item oto uzchartem et kol mitzvot Yehovah va’asitem otam | v’lo taturu acharei l’vavchem v’acharei eineichem asher atem zonim achareihem. L’ma’an tizk’ru va’asitem et kol mitzvotai | vihyitem k’doshim le-Eloheichem. Ani Yehovah Eloheichem asher hotzeti etchem me’eretz Mitzrayim lihyot lachem le-Elohim | ani Yehovah Eloheichem.

And Yehovah spoke unto Moses, saying: “Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them throughout their generations fringes in the corners of their garments, and that they put with the fringe of each corner a thread of blue. And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of Yehovah, and do them; and that ye go not about after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go astray; that ye may remember and do all My commandments, and be holy unto your God. I am Yehovah your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am Yehovah your God.” Numbers 15:37–41

יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ אֵל אֶחָד | אֱמֶת׃

Yehovah Eloheinu El echad | emet.

Yehovah our God is one God; Truth!

וְתוֹרָתוֹ הַתְּמִימָה | אֱמֶת׃

V’torato hat’mimah | emet.

And His Torah is perfect; Truth!

וּמִקְדָּשׁוֹ בֵּית הַתְּפִלָּה | אֱמֶת׃

Umikdasho beit hat’filah | emet.

And His Temple is the House of Prayer; Truth!

וּנְבִיאָיו | אֱמֶת׃

Unvi’av | emet.

And His prophets; Truth!

וְשַבָּתוֹתָיו הַמְקֻדָּשׁוֹת | אֱמֶת׃

V’shabatotav hamkudashot | emet.

And His sanctified Sabbaths; Truth!

וּמִצְוֺתָיו וְחֻקֹּתָיו וְעֵדֹתָיו וּמִשְפָּטָיו וְכָל דְּבָרָיו | אֱמֶת׃

Umitzvotav v’chukotav v’edotav umishpatav v’chol d’varav | emet.

And His commandments and His statutes and His testimonies and His judgments and all His words; Truth!

וַיהוָה אֱלֹהִים אֱמֶת הוּא אֱלֹהִים חַיִּים וּמֶלֶךְ עוֹלָם | מִקִּצְפּוֹ תִּרְעַשׁ הָאָרֶץ וְלֹא יָכִלוּ גוֹיִם זַעְמוֹ׃

Va-Yehovah Elohim emet hu Elohim chayim umelech olam | mikitzpo tir’ash ha’aretz v’lo yachilu goyim za’mo.

But Yehovah is the true God, He is the living God, and the everlasting King; at His wrath the earth trembleth, and the nations are not able to abide His indignation. Jeremiah 10:10

וְאַל תַּצֵּל מִפִּי דְבַר אֱמֶת עַד מְאֹד | כִּי לְמִשְׁפָּטֶךָ יִחָלְתִּי׃

V’al tatzel mipi d’var emet ad m’od | ki l’mishpatecha yichalti.

And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth; for I hope in Thine ordinances. Psalm 119:43

וְהָיָה יְהוָה לְמֶלֶךְ עַל כָּל הָאָרֶץ | בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא יִהְיֶה יְהוָה אֶחָד וּשְׁמוֹ אֶחָד׃

V’hayah Yehovah l’melech al kol ha’aretz | bayom hahu yihyeh Yehovah echad ushmo echad.

And Yehovah shall be King over all the earth; in that day shall Yehovah be One, and His name one. Zechariah 14:9

יִמְלֹךְ יְהוָה לְעוֹלָם אֱלֹהַיִךְ צִיּוֹן לְדֹר וָדֹר הַלְלוּ יָהּ׃

Yimloch Yehovah l’olam Elohayich Tziyon l’dor vador hal’lu Yah.

Yehovah will reign for ever, Thy God, O Zion, unto all generations. Hallelujah. Psalm 146:10

מַלְכוּתְךָ מַלְכוּת כָּל עֹלָמִים | וּמֶמְשֶׁלְתְּךָ בְּכָל דּוֹר וָדוֹר׃

Malchutcha malchut kol olamim | umemshelt’cha b’chol dor vador.

Thy kingdom is a kingdom for all ages, and Thy dominion endureth throughout all generations. Psalm 145:13

כִּי לַיהוָה הַמְּלוּכָה | וּמֹשֵׁל בַּגּוֹיִם׃

Ki la-Yehovah ham’luchah | umoshel bagoyim.

For the kingdom is Yehovah’s; and He is the ruler over the nations. Psalm 22:28 [29 Heb.]

יְהֹוָה מֶלֶךְ יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ יְהוָה יִמְלֹךְ לְעֹלָם וָעֶד׃

Yehovah melech Yehovah malach Yehovah yimloch l’olam va’ed.

Yehovah is king, Yehovah has always been king.⁴⁷ Yehovah shall reign for ever and ever.

הוֹשִׁיעָה אֶת עַמֶּךָ וּבָרֵךְ אֶת נַחֲלָתֶךָ | וּרְעֵם וְנַשְּׂאֵם עַד הָעוֹלָם׃

Hoshi’ah et amecha uvarech et nachalatecha | ur’em v’nas’em ad ha’olam.

Save Thy people, and bless Thine inheritance; and tend them, and carry them for ever. Psalm 28:9

Baruch atah Yehovah Elohei Yisra’el avinu me’olam v’ad olam. L’cha Yehovah hag’dulah v’hag’vurah v’hatif’eret v’hanetzach v’hahod ki chol bashamayim uva’aretz | l’cha Yehovah hamamlachah v’hamitnasei l’chol l’rosh. V’ha’osher v’hakavod mil’fanecha v’atah moshel bakol uvyadcha koach ugvurah | uvyadcha l’gadel ulchazek lakol. V’atah Eloheinu modim anachnu lach | umhal’lim l’shem tif’artecha.

Blessed be Thou, O Yehovah, the God of Israel our father, for ever and ever. Thine, O Yehovah, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty; for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is Thine; Thine is the kingdom, O Yehovah, and Thou art exalted as head above all. Both riches and honour come of Thee, and Thou rulest over all; and in Thy hand is power and might; and in Thy hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all. Now therefore, our God, we thank Thee, and praise Thy glorious name. 1 Chronicles 29:10*–13

וַאֲנַחְנוּ נְבָרֵךְ יָהּ מֵעַתָּה וְעַד עוֹלָם הַלְלוּ יָהּ׃

Va’anachnu n’varech Yah me’atah v’ad olam hal’lu Yah.

But we will bless Yehovah from this time forth and for ever. Hallelujah. Psalm 115:18

Blessed be Yehovah, that hath given rest unto His people Israel, according to all that He promised; there hath not failed one word of all His good promise, which He promised by the hand of Moses His servant. 1 Kings 8:56

Y’hi Yehovah Eloheinu imanu ka’asher hayah im avoteinu | al ya’azvenu v’al yit’shenu. L’hatot l’vavenu elav | lalechet b’chol d’rachav v’lishmor mitzvotav v’chukav umishpatav asher tzivah et avoteinu. V’yihyu d’varai eleh asher hitchananti lifnei Yehovah k’rovim el Yehovah Eloheinu yomam valaylah | la’asot mishpat avdo umishpat amo Yisra’el d’var yom b’yomo. L’ma’an da’at kol amei ha’aretz ki Yehovah hu ha-Elohim | ein od.

Yehovah our God be with us, as He was with our fathers; let Him not leave us, nor forsake us; that He may incline our hearts unto Him, to walk in all His ways, and to keep His commandments, and His statutes, and His ordinances, which He commanded our fathers. And let these my words, wherewith I have made supplication before Yehovah, be nigh unto Yehovah our God day and night, that He maintain the cause of His servant, and the cause of His people Israel, as every day shall require; that all the peoples of the earth may know that Yehovah, He is God; there is none else. 1 Kings 8:57–60

Yehovah, He is God in heaven above and upon the earth beneath; there is none else. Deuteronomy 4:39*

Hu Yehovah Eloheinu | b’chol ha’aretz mishpatav.

He is Yehovah our God; His judgments are in all the earth. Psalm 105:7

וְעַתָּה אֲדֹנָי אֱלֹהֵינוּ אֲשֶׁר הוֹצֵאתָ אֶת עַמְּךָ מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם בְּיָד חֲזָקָה וַתַּעַשׂ לְךָ שֵׁם כַּיּוֹם הַזֶּה | חָטָאנוּ רָשָׁעְנוּ׃

V’atah Adonai Eloheinu asher hotzeta et am’cha me’eretz Mitzrayim b’yad chazakah vata’as l’cha shem kayom hazeh | chatanu rasha’nu.

And now, O Lord our God, that hast brought Thy people forth out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and hast gotten Thee renown, as at this day; we have sinned, we have done wickedly.

אֲדֹנָי כְּכָל צִדְקֹתֶךָ יָשָׁב נָא אַפְּךָ וַחֲמָתְךָ מֵעִירְךָ יְרוּשָׁלִַם הַר קָדְשֶׁךָ | כִּי בַחֲטָאֵינוּ וּבַעֲוֹנוֹת אֲבֹתֵינוּ יְרוּשָׁלִַם וְעַמְּךָ לְחֶרְפָּה לְכָל סְבִיבֹתֵינוּ׃

Adonai k’chol tzidkotecha yashav na ap’cha vachamatcha me’ircha Y’rushalayim har kodshecha | ki vachata’einu uva’avonot avoteinu Y’rushalayim v’am’cha l’cherpah l’chol s’vivoteinu.

O Lord, according to all Thy righteousness, let Thine anger and Thy fury, I pray Thee, be turned away from Thy city Jerusalem, Thy holy mountain; because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and Thy people are become a reproach to all that are about us.

וְעַתָּה שְׁמַע אֱלֹהֵינוּ אֶל תְּפִלַּת עַבְדְּךָ וְאֶל תַּחֲנוּנָיו וְהָאֵר פָּנֶיךָ עַל מִקְדָּשְׁךָ הַשָּׁמֵם | לְמַעַן אֲדֹנָי׃

V’atah sh’ma Eloheinu el t’filat avd’cha v’el tachanunav v’ha’er panecha al mikdashcha hashamem | l’ma’an Adonai.

Now therefore, O our God, hearken unto the prayer of Thy servant, and to his supplications, and cause Thy face to shine upon Thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord’s sake.⁴⁸

הַטֵּה אֱלֹהַי אָזְנְךָ וּשֲׁמָע פְּקַח עֵינֶיךָ וּרְאֵה שֹׁמְמֹתֵינוּ וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶיהָ | כִּי לֹא עַל צִדְקֹתֵינוּ אֲנַחְנוּ מַפִּילִים תַּחֲנוּנֵינוּ לְפָנֶיךָ כִּי עַל רַחֲמֶיךָ הָרַבִּים׃

Hateh Elohai azn’cha ushama p’kach einecha ur’eh shom’moteinu v’ha’ir asher nikra shimcha aleha | ki lo al tzidkoteinu anachnu mapilim tachanuneinu l’fanecha ki al rachamecha harabim.

O my God, incline Thine ear, and hear; open Thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city upon which Thy name is called; for we do not present our supplications before Thee because of our righteousness, but because of Thy great compassions.

אֲדֹנָי שְׁמָעָה אֲדֹנָי סְלָחָה אֲדֹנָי הַקֲשִׁיבָה וַעֲשֵׂה אַל תְּאַחַר | לְמַעֲנְךָ אֱלֹהַי כִּי שִׁמְךָ נִקְרָא עַל עִירְךָ וְעַל עַמֶּךָ׃

Adonai sh’ma’ah Adonai s’lachah Adonai hakashivah va’aseh al t’achar | l’ma’ancha Elohai ki shimcha nikra al ircha v’al amecha.

O Lord, hear, O Lord, forgive, O Lord, attend and do, defer not; for Thine own sake, O my God, because Thy name is called upon Thy city and Thy people. Daniel 9:15–19

שׁוּב מֵחֲרוֹן אַפֶּךָ וְהִנָּחֵם עַל הָרָעָה לְעַמֶּךָ׃

Shuv mecharon apecha v’hinachem al hara’ah l’amecha.

Turn from Thy fierce wrath, and relent of this evil against Thy people. Exodus 32:12*

שׁוּב לְמַעַן עֲבָדֶיךָ שִׁבְטֵי נַחֲלָתֶךָ׃

Shuv l’ma’an avadecha shivtei nachalatecha.

Return for Thy servants’ sake, the tribes of Thine inheritance. Isaiah 63:17*

הֲשִׁיבֵנוּ יְהוָה אֵלֶיךָ וְנָשׁוּבָה חַדֵּשׁ יָמֵינוּ כְּקֶדֶם׃

Hashivenu Yehovah elecha v’nashuvah chadesh yameinu k’kedem.

Turn Thou us unto Thee, O Yehovah, and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old. Lamentations 5:21

וְסָלַחְתָּ לַעֲוֹנֵנוּ וּלְחַטָּאתֵנוּ וּנְחַלְתָּנוּ׃

V’salachta la’avonenu ulchatatenu unchaltanu.

And pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for Thine inheritance. Exodus 34:9*

בָּרוּךְ יְהוָה לְעוֹלָם אָמֵן וְאָמֵן׃

Baruch Yehovah Elohim Elohei Yisra’el | oseh nifla’ot l’vado. Uvaruch shem k’vodo l’olam | v’yimalei ch’vodo et kol ha’aretz amen v’amen.

Blessed be Yehovah God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things; and blessed be His glorious name for ever; and let the whole earth be filled with His glory. Amen, and Amen. Psalm 72:18–19

Please, O Yehovah, God of Israel, may it be Thy will to look from Thy holy dwelling in heaven with mercy and see the greatness of my suffering, affliction, and humiliation. When my soul fainteth within me, cast me not off from before Thee. When my strength faileth, save me in Thy mercy from all my debts, forgive all my iniquities, and pardon all my transgressions. End my years in pleasantness, and have pity and mercy upon me and upon my entire family. Please cause me to have success in my current plans and endeavors, and guard me in this city from evil men, from violent persons, and from the wicked people of the generation. Likewise, save me from the terror of the strife of the wicked, who provoke upon the roads and gloat in the cities; save me from them. Make me not depend upon any man nor upon the hand of any flesh and blood. Open before me Thy full and generous hand, give peace among us, and send blessing upon all our works. Feed us our allotted bread, and give us food to eat and clothing to wear, for we depend upon Thee, and in Thy great and holy name do we trust and seek shelter. Assist me to purify myself, O merciful and gracious God.

Blessed be Thy name, O God of gods, and Lord of lords. Thou didst create me in Thy great mercy, didst breathe into me the breath of life, and gavest me wisdom and understanding to declare Thy mighty acts and to sing Thy wonders.
